Position Type: Contract/Hourly Employment/Extracurricular Assignment - Professional PersonnelDate Posted: 12/11/2024Location: Taylor County Middle SchoolClosing Date: 12/17/2024County: Taylor County SchoolsEXTRA-CURRICULAR ASSIGNMENT PROFESSIONAL Job Description: Golden Horseshoe Prep Club Advisor Location: Taylor County Middle School To whom Responsible: Building Principal STIPEND: $30.00 per hour up to 150 hours EFFECTIVE DATE: Upon Board Approval December 2024 through April 2025 Time: 3:15-5:15 Monday through Friday as needed Job Overview: The Golden Horseshoe Prep Club Advisor will lead and mentor a group of middle school students who are preparing for the prestigious Golden Horseshoe Examination. This club is designed to engage students in the study of West Virginia history, geography, government, and other topics relevant to the Golden Horseshoe competition. The advisor will guide students through structured study sessions, practice activities, and help them develop skills in critical thinking, teamwork, and test-taking strategies. Key Responsibilities:
  • Club Organization and Management:
    • Plan and lead weekly or bi-weekly meetings for students interested in participating in the Golden Horseshoe Examination.
    • Develop a curriculum and study plan that covers key topics such as West Virginia history, geography, and state government.
    • Organize practice tests and review sessions to assess students' progress.
    • Foster a supportive and motivating environment where all students feel encouraged to succeed.
  • Student Mentorship and Support:
    • Provide personalized assistance to students who need additional help with study materials.
    • Encourage collaboration and teamwork among club members to strengthen their knowledge and test-taking skills.
    • Help students build confidence and prepare for the competition both mentally and academically.
  • Communication and Coordination:
    • Communicate regularly with students and parents to update them on club activities, meeting schedules, and upcoming events.
    • Coordinate with the school administration to ensure the proper registration of students for the Golden Horseshoe Exam and to facilitate any necessary accommodations.
  • Competition Preparation:
    • Prepare students for the Golden Horseshoe Examination, offering practice quizzes, review materials, and mock competitions.
    • Organize additional activities, such as field trips or guest speakers, to enhance learning experiences and provide a broader understanding of West Virginia's history and culture.
    • Serve as the main point of contact for students on the day of the competition, ensuring they are well-prepared and informed.
  • Qualifications:
    • Strong knowledge of West Virginia history, geography, and government.
    • Previous experience working with middle school students, ideally in an academic setting.
    • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
    • Enthusiasm for history and a passion for helping students succeed.
    • Ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve their best.
    • Preferred: Experience with competitive events or academic clubs.
    Time Commitment:
    • Weekly meetings after school (typically 1-2 hours per session).
    • Additional time for preparation, coordination, and support during the competition period.
