Reporting to the Speciali Facilities Manager, this role will supervise maintenance personnel. Work schedule will include nights, weekends, and holidays.Essential Tasks
  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of golf course grounds, fairways, tees and greens, irrigation and water systems involving general grass cutting, brush and bush clearing, the cutting, aeration, dressing and watering of greens with specialized equipment, the repair of water and sprinkle systems and the preparation and application of specialized chemicals, fertilizers and soil enrichment materials;
  • Diagnoses condition of greens; anticipates weather and climatic conditions and initiates appropriate maintenance action;
  • Oversees the maintenance, repair and construction of golf course facilities;
  • Supervises the use and care of mowing equipment, dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, and other golf course maintenance equipment;
  • Supervises and participates in carpentry, electrical and plumbing work, tree cutting and pruning;
  • Supervises and participates in installation of drains, drainage lines, and rebuilding sand traps;
  • Operates golf course equipment in connection with the above tasks;
  • Maintains inventory records of supplies and materials;
  • Prepares and maintains budget, authorizes purchases of golf course materials, equipment and supplies;
  • Ensures that equipment is maintained in safe operating condition;
  • Irrigates and assists in the management of damaged turf and turf under stress;
  • Stays alert to trouble spots and disease or insect identification on turf;
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards
QualificationsQualifications
  • Education
    • Graduation with an Associate's Degree or greater in agronomy, turf grass management, or related field.
    • Formal education which includes basic arithmetic and/or business math.
  • Supervision
    • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Must have a valid NC Pesticide License
  • Substantial experience in the technical care and maintenance of golf course grounds.
  • Must be able to work with all types of people in enforcing rules and regulations and safety requirements.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices used in golf course maintenance and construction.
  • Thorough knowledge of turf diseases and the chemicals necessary to treat same.
  • Ability to analyze soil conditions and devise a formula to correct unhealthy conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees and the general public.
  • Ability to prepare reports, expense budgets and maintain records.
  • Must have skill in operation of golf course equipment.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
Physical RequirementsHearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are necessary to converse with other employees and supervisor working together to accomplish task.Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see the patrons across an open space and give instructions to them regarding the program activity.Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected.
  • Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see program materials, telephone, merchandise, documents and other paperwork near at hand.Both eyes 20/22 corrected.
  • Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time. Depth perception - 4
  • Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span to cover surrounding area in order to observe patrons who are located in the area while attending to the activity at hand.
  • Accommodation -Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area. Must be able to adjust the lens of eye to glance quickly at equipment or people who are located at varying distances.

Good judgement is important because the individual may interact directly with the public on a constant basis and may be working in the absence of a supervisor.

    • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to use arithmetic to add and figure number of program participants and attendants, collect fees, make change and make reports.

    • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.
    Environmental ConditionsPhysical Surroundings
    • The Golf Course Superintendent is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposure to the various weather conditions and temperatures including extremely hot, extremely cold, rain, wind and ice. Combining the type of work performed with the weather conditions, the Golf Course Superintendent should be one who can work outside for long periods of time without becoming exhausted. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting wet, dirty and sweaty.
    Hazards
    • The Golf Course Superintendent will be exposed to water, trash, garbage, grass, insects, chemicals and pesticides. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
