Job Description:
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the part-time grant supported Grade Enhancement Mentor (GEM)/tutor position is responsible for providing workshops, small groups, and individual instruction, and working closely with the Department of Human and Life Sciences faculty to promote appropriate academic support. The Biology GEM must be able to provide support for students in all Biology courses. Essential Job Functions:
  • Develop and conduct science and other appropriate workshops for students; develop instructional materials in science.
  • Meets with students on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and improve study skills through one or more of the following techniques:
  • Facilitation of effective study methods in reviewing class material and predicting test questions.
  • Discussion of the class text.
  • Facilitate tutee's formulation of topics and ideas for their class assignments.
  • Facilitate methods for problem solving.
  • For each applicable course, utilizes the current course syllabus, textbook and supplemental materials as approved by the applicable faculty.
  • Provide instructional assistance to individuals and small groups of students in Biology courses.
  • Utilize computers for instructional purposes.
  • Attend grant meetings as appropriate.
  • Work appropriate hours in accordance with existing scheduling procedure, which may include evening, weekend, and possibly off-campus assignments.
  • All other duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Supervisory Responsibilities None Minimum Job QualificationsEducation and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's in a Science related field or Science Education from an accredited institution required; a Master's degree preferred.
  • One year experience teaching or tutoring, preferably at a college level OR equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide similar knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Word, Powerpoint and Excel.
  • Knowledge of educational technology expected.
  • Evidence of appropriate worked-related experience relevant to the position. Demonstrable interest in student success.
  • The flexibility, skills, and ability to thrive in an environment with ample workloads, changing priorities and deadline pressure.

Must be able to read, write and speak fluently in English. Physical Demands An individual in this position will be exposed to a typical office or small classroom environment on a college campus. Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours/day and climb stairs as required. Some lifting (up to 25 pounds occasionally), bending, and carrying. Specific vision abilities include the ability to use close vision. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and to use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
