Enhance your skills in our Medical Surgical unit within a supportive and educational atmosphere.Job Summary: The Graduate/Registered Nurse works underthe direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, or their designee, in accordance with the objectives, policies, and procedures of the nursing department and established professional standards. Effectively interacts with patients and healthcare members, while maintaining standards of professional nursing.Demonstrates knowledge of the nursing process by complete and accurate patient assessments, initiation and implementation of Nursing Care Plan, with evaluation and alteration of nursing care as needed.Administers medication in accordance with policies/procedures/standards of care.Demonstrates competency in maintenance and use of log books, forms and computer programs required in the operation of the unit.Duties/Responsibilities:Demonstrates competency/ability to:

  • Completes admission assessment.
  • Develops and maintains NCP according to Policy and Procedure.
  • Assesses individual patient learning needs and institutes teaching methods in preparation for discharge.
  • Regularly assesses nursing care, identifies potential problems, develops nursing interventions, and directs implementation of nursing interventions to all health care team members.
  • Successfully completes Pharmacology Course requirements.
  • Knowledge of medications administered.
  • Ability to prepare and administer medications via all acceptable routes.
  • Ability to identify reactions to drugs; records and reports reactions appropriately.
  • Accurately, clearly and concisely record all pertinent information on the patient's medical record, according
  • to Policy and Procedure.
  • Use computer programs, including Order Entry, per policy and procedure as assigned.
  • Demonstrates competence in assembling, using and maintaining required equipment.
  • Regularly checks equipment and emergency crash cart per unit-specific policy.
  • Maintains proper level of stock and emergency supplies as unit requires.
  • Utilizes proper techniques of body mechanics.
  • Correctly identifies patient by name and ID band for all direct care, procedures or treatments.
  • Patients with allergies are properly identified.
  • Strictly follows principles of asepsis and infection control guidelines when performing patient care.
  • Routinely provides for patient safety through preventive measures (i.e. side rails, restraints as per physician order, low bed position and safe transport to other areas).
  • Demonstrates complete knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Participates in hospital emergency and disaster drills; knows role in the event of a fire while on duty.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work effectively and communicate frequently with other members of the patient care team.
  • Handles telephone information with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality; receives information and distributes messages appropriately.
  • Consistently communicates appropriately with patients; speaks respectfully and responds to patient needs or requests for assistance promptly.
  • Provides accurate communication in verbal, non-verbal and written form. Listens effectively.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
The Registered Nurse - 1st year GN, must demonstrate competence and show responsibility in the following areas:
  • Uses appropriate resources (equipment, ideas, personnel) in providing individualized patient care.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess self-learning needs and seeks assistance to meet those needs.
  • Participates in cross-training; accepts assignments to other units/shifts as hospital needs require.
  • Attendance ensures that job requirements are met.
  • Present and ready for work in designated area at assigned time.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all patient, hospital, and physician related information; demonstrates complete discretion when discussing patient information.
  • Actively participates in in-service programs; attends all mandatory classes as required; completes unit-specific competencies.
  • Demonstrates supportive and understanding communication and behavior when in contact with guests (patients, visitors, clients, physicians, employees, volunteers, etc.), always displaying positive guest relations.
  • Complies with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and required immunizations.
  • Successfully completes IV Therapy Course requirements.
  • Successfully completes Telemetry Course requirements.
Education and Experience:
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Successful application for RN Limited Permit with NYS prior to start
  • Conditional on passing of RN Exam within 12 months of graduation of Nursing Program
Working Conditions:
  • Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling beds, wheelchairs and recliners in excess of approximately 200 pounds with assistance. Requires lifting, carrying, repositioning, and transferring patients using proper body mechanics.
  • Position requires attendance, as scheduled, to ensure requirements are met.
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, and infectious/hazardous materials.
  • Occasionally requires assembling, operating, checking, and maintaining equipment.
  • Requires attending meetings as well as participation on committees as required.
  • Actively participates in in-service programs, in Quality Assurance programs and CQI, cross-training; attends all mandatory classes as required; completes unit-specific competencies.
  • Complies with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and required immunizations.
  • Maintain ACLS/PALS certifications as required.
