About UPMC Hamot Med/Surg:

3 South Observation Unit: 3 South is a 23 bed unit that provides patient care following failed outpatient treatment, unsuccessful condition improvement from the Emergency Department or care following procedures. These adult, medical-surgical patients require ongoing stabilization of care, reassessment for discharge or admission to the hospital. Examples of this patient population include but are not limited to: low level trauma, ambulatory dysfunction, low-risk chest pain, respiratory complaints, post-surgical patients, and infusions.

4 South: 4 South is a 23-bed Trauma and Orthopedics unit. This medical-surgical unit is a great place for nurses to care for a variety of patients with different medical needs. The team provides nursing care to the trauma population (patients involved in motor vehicle accidents, gunshot, stabbing and assault victims, fall injuries, etc.), and patients with bone injuries, infections, deformities due to trauma.

4 IU (MRIU): MRIU is a medical/respiratory intermediate and trauma step down unit. The primary focus is caring for a variety of patients with trauma and respiratory complications requiring a higher level of care, but not critical care. The unit services patient populations requiring Bipap, high flow oxygen therapy, CPAP, and Aquanox therapy. The unit also services patients requiring dialysis, mechanical ventilation, and tracheostomy care.

**4 North Flex:** 4 North is an 11-bed transitional support unit, providing care for medical and surgical patients who are medically stable and are awaiting discharge. This unit is a great place for nurses who share a passion for long-term care nursing while also wanting to explore an inpatient hospital setting and all that UPMC has to offer.

5 South: 5 South is a 46-bed medical-telemetry unit with cardiac patient populations that include Coronary Artery Disease, Acute Myocardial Infarction, Heart Failure, and Arrhythmias. Medical patients are also cared for on the unit with diagnosis that includes Pneumonia, Renal Failure, Chest Pain, Syncope, and Pulmonary Embolus. Twenty-five of the patient rooms on the unit are equipped with bedside cardiac monitors to care for the more complex patients requiring intermediate care. The staff on this unit provides Telemetry and Intermediate Unit care to post cardiac procedure patients following invasive procedures that include TEE, Cardioversion, EP studies, Implantable Devices (Pacemakers and ICDs), Cardiac Catheterization, Coronary Interventions, Vascular Interventions, Carotid Stents, and TAVRs.

6 South: 6 South is a 43-bed Medical/Surgical unit with 11 beds dedicated as Step Down to service higher acuity patients. This acuity blended unit provides post-operative adult care for Cardiothoracic, Vascular and Gastric Bypass/Weight Loss surgical patients. The unit also serves patient populations requiring telemetry or oxygen monitoring. The Step-Down unit serves patients after kidney transplant and hepatobiliary surgeries along with the other patient populations who require closer monitoring as a bridge from ICU to the regular nursing unit. The unit offers care for patients requiring CPAP, BIPAP, and Optiflow oxygen therapy, glycemic control, and vasoactive medications. The general telemetry beds offer care of the patient requiring anti-arrhythmic medications, electrolyte replacement, and hemodynamic medication administration.

7 South: 7 South is a 46-bed acute medical-oncology unit that provides care for adults 18 and older and geriatric patients with a variety of medical illnesses. The unit specializes in oncology care and provides chemotherapy to cancer patients. The staff on 7 South care for inpatients, outpatients and observation patients receiving transfusions of blood products, chemotherapy, IV hydration, heparin drips, CBI, PCA pump for pain control, remote telemetry, wound care, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and diabetes care. Within our 46 beds, we have 12 step-down beds for patients who require a higher level of care.

8 South: 8 South is a 20-bed unit who cares for adult and geriatric neurological or neurosurgical patients. Within the 20 beds are 9 beds capable of accommodating intermediate care patients and 2 beds capable of accommodating epilepsy monitoring patients (EMU). The unit provides service to patients with neurological conditions that include cerebral vascular accidents (CVAs), seizures, transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), multiple sclerosis (MS), and other neurological disorders. The unit also provides for patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures, which include craniotomies, back surgeries, spinal cord stimulators, deep brain stimulators, cranial nerve decompressions, and aneurysm coilings/clippings.

8 East: 8 East is a 23-bed medical-surgical unit that provides care to medical patients and postoperative care for colon-rectal, general surgery, urology, neurosurgery, and ENT patients. The unit is a great fit for graduate nurses and nurses who are seeking to build a solid foundation in med/surg or are seeking to expand knowledge from a diverse patient population. 8 East is a team driven unit providing patient-centered care to patients requiring TPN, wound vac management and ostomies with support from our skilled wound ostomy nurses. Nurses are trained in foley insertions requiring further intervention and provide support to other departments in managing patients that are difficult to catheterize.

Shifts/Hours:?Our RNs work a rotating 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.

Graduate Nurses must be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role OR ability to start with TPP. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the My Nursing Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.

+ The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.

+ Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

+ BSN preferred.

+ Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

+ Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

+ Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

+ UPMC approved national certification preferred.

+ Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

+ CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
