Job Description The Business department at The New York Times is looking for an experienced visual journalist to report, write, design and code graphics and multimedia stories. This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities:
  • Identify, report and executive smart, visual stories about business, the economy, technology and related topics.
  • Analyze data, documents and evidence to find stories.
  • Collaborate with other journalists from around the newsroom to create original visual journalism.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to a Deputy Editor.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 5 + years experience producing coverage on breaking news and enterprise timelines and publishing a variety of visual forms.
  • Expertise in development of interactive graphics or websites, including HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Skill in interface, user experience and information graphic design
  • Experience reporting and producing visual journalism
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Illustrator
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to meet deadlines and make decisions in a daily, unpredictable high-pressure news production environment.
  • You should exercise excellent news judgment and visual creativity while ensuring the accuracy, clarity and readability of the material they publish.
  • Curiosity and interest in the news, and in finding innovative approaches to telling stories.
  • Experience working collaboratively with members of a mixed-media team.
  • Experience with, and a preference for, working collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team of data, visual and words journalists.
  • Traditional reporting skills and the ability to write quickly and cleanly
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,711.62 and $136,000.00.
