The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 19,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color.LOCATION: Communications & Community at Central OfficeDISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSThe work involves responsibility for performing a variety of artwork and designing and preparing illustrative and informative material used for a variety of educational, training, informational, and promotional purposes to attract attention to potential readers, to epitomize and reinforce ideas expressed verbally, and to aid in communicating messages through print and digital mediums. Employees in this class prepare materials such as flyers, brochures, annual reports, charts, maps and web pages using the latest graphic design and web publishing software. Assignments are given with general instructions, which allow considerable leeway for independent judgment in designing, preparing, and carrying out tasks. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Graphics Technicians and helpers. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
  • Prepares a variety of graphic materials including flyers, brochures, annual reports, charts, maps and web pages, for printed publications, reports, displays, exhibits, websites and for training and informational purposes.
  • Prepares finished illustrations from ideas conceived by supervisor or staff members requesting work by using appropriate media and materials.
  • Creates web page templates and design themes for improved content layout, navigation, and overall end-user experience.
  • May prepare artistic renderings to illustrate buildings, landscapes, mechanisms, and equipment by using appropriate art media and techniques, working from drawings, photographs, and similar source materials.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Thorough knowledge of graphic design, illustration, and image editing computer software.
  • Thorough knowledge of web design, web browsers, web page layout.
  • Good working knowledge of Web content creation software.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to visualize and interpret ideas through the various mediums of graphic design.
  • Ability to produce quality art work/layout in various media.
  • Ability to visually distinguish fine variations in color and the spacing of elements on a page to achieve aesthetically pleasing layout designs for print and web.
  • Ability to use graphs and charts to interpret statistical data.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSPromotion:Two (2) years of permanent class status as a Graphics Technician.Open Competitive:
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in commercial art, graphics design, website development, or a closely related field;or,
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree and two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in commercial art,
  • Successful completion from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with sixty (60) semester credit hours in commercial art, graphics design, website development, or a closely related field and two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in commercial art, graphics design, website development, or a closely related field or,
  • Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in commercial art, graphics design, website development, or a closely related field;or,
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C).
    • This position will be hired provisionally. All candidates must meet the minimum qualifications on the Onondaga County Civil Service job description for this title. When the exam for this title is offered, the successful candidate must pass the exam and be reachable on the resulting eligibility list, in order to be retained.
    • The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $102.50 to the candidate.
