Position Purpose: Reporting to the Greenhouse Manager, the Greenhouse Grower is responsible for cultivating plants for variousresearch and commercial purposes. They are required to utilize the greenhouse facilities to produce food and ornamental crops, using hydroponic and other soilless techniques under the direction and supervision of the Greenhouse Manager.Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
  • Develop, implement, and follow safety policies and regulations.
  • Determine the demand of the market and plan the cultivation accordingly.
  • Constantly monitor pH, and EC of hydroponic nutrient solutions.
  • Regularly scout for pests and disease and use appropriate control methods when necessary.
  • Inspect the fertilizer injectors, irrigation equipment, and other greenhouse facilities to check for disrepair and maintain them properly.
  • Clean and maintain hydroponic systems.
  • Understand appropriate harvest and packing methods for hydroponic lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, and tomatoes.
  • Maintain high-wire crops like tomato by trimming, supporting trusses, irrigation, fertilization, and any other appropriate activities.
  • Undertake any other responsibilities as said by the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
RequirementsEssential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Greenhouse growers should have expertise in various gardening and horticulture techniques.
  • Optimize the process of growing vegetable crops in controlled environments (e.g., indoor and vertical farming).
  • Identify appropriate vegetable crop species and germplasm resources.
  • Develop and/or identify appropriate production requirements (i.e. nutrient solutions, CO2, plant spacing, light requirements, harvest interval, etc.) for specific vegetable production systems.
  • Develop standard protocols for vegetable crop production and propagation under hydroponic systems.
  • Identify and develop appropriate plant architecture for use in production systems.
  • Identify product shelf life for vegetable crops.
  • They should be well versed in the various disease and pest control techniques by using pesticides and medicines. They should have good management skills and be good supervisors and trainers.
  • They should be keen on the adverse effects of some techniques and pesticides on the global environment and should take attempts to avoid them at all costs.
  • Apply existing theories and scientific methodologies from relevant, allied fields to estimate crop performance and productivity in different settings.
  • Maintains an inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, etc., and prepares solutions and reagents for use in the greenhouse.
  • Collects, measures, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records.
  • Tabulates and summarizes data using personal computers and software.
  • Maintains, calibrates, and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Plan and conduct research to model growth, yield, and quality plants in response to environmental conditions and nutrition.
  • Develop new knowledge on vegetable crop production and propagation in controlled environments.
  • They should have a basic knowledge of computers so that the records can be properly maintained.
  • Good communication and interaction skills.
  • They should be able to work in damp and warm conditions.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or equivalent two (2) + years of greenhouse experience.
  • Master's degree in Horticulture or bachelor's degree in Horticulture and two (2) + years of greenhouse experience preferred.
Certifications:
  • Valid Driver's License and Insurance.

Work Requirements:Position involves prolonged sitting, stooping, bending, lifting, or carrying up to 50 pounds daily. Work is generally performed in a greenhouse environment with varying levels of lighting, air quality, noise, and/or temperature.
