Job Title: Grinder/Chipper Department: Grinding Department Reports To: Grinding Supervisor Labor Grade: 7 SUMMARY Grinds and chips work piece to groove, bevel, round or straighten edges or remove excess stock from metals as specified by drawings, job orders, or guidelines or to removed defects, such as shrink cracks and holes by performing the following duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
  • Positions work piece manually or by using jib of crane.
  • Inserts selected grinding wheel or cutting chisel into portable grinder or power hammer.
  • Positions and manually guides tool along specified guidelines on edge or surface of work piece or guides work piece contours around stationary grinding wheel.
  • Inspects work. Grinds portable parts on pedestal grinder.
  • Removes sharp edges or burrs. Chips or grinds out pits or cracks.
  • Grinds, chips, or brushes off excess metal, splatter, or rust to improve appearance of work piece.
  • Dresses grinding wheel.
  • Reads and follows specific work instructions contained in standard procedures, job work orders, and from supervisors.
  • Maintains accurate counts of work pieces produced and accurate personal time and attendance records.
  • Practices safe work habits, maintains workplace in good order, and wears all issued personal protective equipment at all times in the workplace.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has not supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. COMPETENCE, AWARENESS AND TRAINING Competence, awareness, and training for probationary employees will be assessed by the New Employee Checklist, and the evaluations conducted and 30, 60, and 90 days, along with other training as needed. Competence, awareness, and training for regular employees will be assessed when annual evaluations are conducted, along with other measurements in accordance with the area the employee is assigned to. 2nd shift 19.50$ start-$20 after 90 day review - $3 2nd shift premium Hours: 3:30 pm - 2 am Mon-Thursday Overtime may be required
