The City of Redding is inviting applications to fill one Ground Worker vacancy. Under general supervision, Ground Workers perform unskilled and semi-skilled duties, usually in connection with the construction, maintenance and operation of electrical power transmission and distribution systems. The employee's principal duties are normally performed as an assistant to a Line Technician.

* Assist Electric Power Line Workers.
* Set or pull wire for above ground, or underground, construction or repair.
* Assist Electric Line Tree Trimmers; operate brush trimmers.
* Operate other power tools, or hand tools as necessary.
* Drive and provide routine care of trucks.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

* Knowledge of the operation of hand tools and power tools
* Knowledge of the operation of a bucket truck
* Knowledge of pole top rescue procedures
* Knowledge of standard first aid procedures
* Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees
* Ability to operate power equipment safely
* Ability to provide assistance to Electric Power Line Workers in a safe manner
* Ability to operate a bucket truck for emergency rescue if necessary, and provide first aid assistance
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying
* Typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent and completion of a pre-apprentice line technician training program.
* Typical experience would include any prior experience as an Electric Utility Ground Worker.
* Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, including a tanker endorsement or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
* Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue.

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
* Positive past employment references.
* Review of driver history record.
* Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older).
* Passing a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test.
Veterans Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating Honorable Discharge from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
