Primary Purpose:
Under general supervision, the Irrigation Specialist maintains and repairs all district irrigation systems including modification of existing systems and the planning, cost estimating, and installation of new systems. The Irrigation Specialist performs specialized work on irrigation systems.
Qualifications:
Education:
Clear and valid Texas driver's license
Landscape Irrigation Technician license from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Thorough knowledge of sprinkler controllers, wiring, piping, and all mechanical components and the mechanical principles of sprinkler equipment. Ability to investigate troubleshoot and repair systems, plan, estimate costs, and install or modify irrigation systems for particular sections of the campus; maintain existing irrigation systems; operate equipment, such as trenchers, excavators, leak detectors, etc.; provide lead work direction to others; and read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
Read and interpret routine written or printed materials
Basic math skills
Ability to effectively use garden and hand tools
Experience:
Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in the maintenance, repair, or modification of irrigation systems and irrigation equipment.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Employment
Repair broken sprinkler lines, sprinkler heads, valves, and related equipment
Clears blockages from valves and pipes; inspects, services, maintains, and repairs automatic sprinkler control devices;
Perform minor repairs on sprinkler control devices; establish and maintain sprinkler system preventive maintenance programs.
Plan irrigation systems, select types of irrigation equipment, estimate costs, and install or modify sprinkler systems
Review landscaped areas and coordinate the installation of new sprinkler systems and the modification of existing sprinkler systems, taking into consideration the vegetation, soil conditions, and evaporation and water retention factors
Work closely with contractors installing sprinkler systems around new structures to ensure proper irrigating capabilities of the system;
Prepare or revise sketches or plans to show the location of pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, and water pressure;
May perform emergency repair work on irrigation systems;
May on occasion perform Groundsworker duties
May drive other automotive equipment in the performance of assigned duties.
Make repairs and additions to existing irrigation systems.
Maintain the programming of all irrigation systems.
Respond to emergency calls as needed.
Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping.
Report items in need of repair to the grounds supervisor.
Assist with the maintenance of all athletic fields.
Performs preventative maintenance on equipment. Reports any major damage to the supervisor.

Tools/Equipment Used: Operates pickup truck, trailers, backhoes, lawn and landscaping equipment, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, miscellaneous hand and power tools.
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; may work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding; regular grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds and over)
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, and vibration; exposure to chemical and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent district wide travel
