Clingman Street GoldsboroJob Type: Full-Time PermanentJob Number: 2024-00071Department: PW - Building MaintenanceOpening Date: 10/11/2024Closing Date: ContinuousGeneral Statement of Duties/Distinguished Features of the Class Performs semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of the City grounds, including mowing right-of-ways and vacant lots, clearing sidewalks of grass, branches and limbs, etc. An employee in this class will operate various types of equipment and vehicles, as well as perform manual duties, to mow grass, trim bushes and trees, load and haul materials, supplies, soil, dirt, etc. in the performance of daily operations. Employees in this class primarily operate tractors with flail or bush hog mowers and commercial mowers but could occasionally operate skid steers, backhoes, loaders, etc. Employee performs work in accordance with established safety rules and regulations. Employee may be required to work shifts or on weekends during severe weather, such as hurricanes, winter snow storms, high winds, etc. Essential Duties and Tasks
- Operates various types of equipment, primarily tractors with bush hog or flail mower attachments and commercial mowers, but may occasionally operate backhoes, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, skid steers, etc.
- Ensures machinery and equipment are properly maintained; completes daily checks and preventative maintenance requirements, and schedules maintenance and repairs accordingly to ensure equipment remains in good working order.
- Uses various gas, electric and hand tools to perform daily tasks, including weed eaters, blowers, chain saws, shovels, rakes, bush axes, hoes, etc.
- Performs varied landscaping duties, including mowing, weed eating, trimming shrubs and trees, seeding grass, and spreading lime and fertilizer, as well as applying herbicides and pesticides for weeds and fire ants.
- Assists with manually cleaning catch basins and other drainage structures to remove obstructions, primarily during heavy rain events.
- Assists building maintenance staff with fundamental tasks as needed.
- Assists with setting up for City's special functions throughout the year.
- Assists sign shop with fabricating and installing street signs and markers as needed.
- Prepares daily logs and other reports to track performance and completed tasks; uses computer and related software to input data.
- Assists other departments and agencies as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, equipment and principles used in landscaping, as well as turf and grounds maintenance, with specific regard to municipal right-of-ways and vacant lots.
- Knowledge of the operational and preventative maintenance requirements for equipment and vehicles assigned to perform primary duties.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of assigned equipment and performance of daily responsibilities.

Physical Requirements/Special Requirements PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, dexterity and full range of motion. The following additional physical abilities are also required: crouching, kneeling, manual dexterity, hearing, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity and walking. WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work is generally performed in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposed to various hazards such as working in heavy traffic, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, oils, in close quarters, man holes, or trenches. Work is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental risks which require a range of safety and other precautions. Employees will be required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shield.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
