Job Description:

Position: Grounds Maintenance, Mechanic

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The grounds maintenance mechanic is responsible for mowing, trimming, and general maintenance of all district ground. Additionally, performs preventive maintenance and repair of electrically powered and gasoline and diesel-powered groundskeeping equipment and machines, and small hand and power tools or equipment used in planting, cultivating, and trimming grounds and landscapes.

The mechanic keeps maintenance records on preventive maintenance services performed and repairs completed on all ground's equipment and is accountable for all grounds maintenance small hand and power tolls and maintains an inventory of parts and supplies for grounds equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

* High school diploma or GED equivalent (preferred)

* Valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record and must meet and maintain liability coverage eligibility

* Ability to operate riding mowers and light tractors (i.e., mower, brush hog, airify athletic fields

* Ability to use various types of equipment and tools used in the maintenance of grounds

Special Knowledge/Skills:

* Performs preventive maintenance of grounds equipment by following manufacturers' recommendations or using personal experience regarding tune-ups, lubrications, oil and filter changes, adjusting or changing belts and hoses, sharpening or replacing blades, on push mowers, riding mowers, tillers, tractors, and similar grounds equipment.

* Reduces the need for contract maintenance services of grounds equipment by troubleshooting and repairing (within capabilities) a variety of equipment, automotive and truck problems including electrical systems, brakes, carburetors, engine compression, clutch and transmission, injectors, differentials, pumps, hydraulic and power take-off operations.

* Ensures that grounds equipment requiring major maintenance services or repairs receive those services by determining the extent of services or repairs required and arranging with other University or contract maintenance shops for services or repairs beyond the capability to perform or that are too costly (i.e., time and money) for the grounds shop to perform.

* Promotes preventive maintenance as a strategy for maintaining grounds equipment by developing and recommending preventive maintenance programs and schedules, instructing grounds employees on the proper methods of operation and upkeep of the equipment, inspecting tools and equipment for condition, repairing, cleaning, adjusting or lubricating them, and notifying the Assistant Director, Facilities Maintenance, Grounds of signs of equipment abuse or neglect.

* Maintains appropriate maintenance records by keeping records of all ground's equipment operating hours, preventive maintenance services performed, and repairs completed.

* Ensures the availability and accountability of required parts, components, and supplies by maintaining an inventory of parts and supplies for grounds equipment, storing those items in an appropriate and secure container, and reordering replacement items as necessary.

* Repairs damaged grounds maintenance equipment by welding and/or cutting to mend broken, bent or loose items where close fit or tolerances are not critical.

* Contributes to the overall success of the Grounds Department by performing all other related duties as assigned.

* Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Experience:

* Five (5) years' experience in grounds maintenance and/or mechanics (preferred)

MENTAL DEMANDS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Tools/Equipment Used: Including but not limited to hand tools, small power tools, multimeter, pressure gauge leak detector, bearing puller, laptop computer and all other related mechanic equipment and tools.

Posture/Motion: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, driving, traveling.

Lifting: Lifting and/or carrying, 15-50 pounds.

Environment: Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration. Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours.

Mental Demands: Reading; ability to understand verbal instructions; ability to communicate effectively (verbal). Maintain emotional control under stress.

The district contributes $400/monthly to the cost of employee-only health insurance which is $175/monthly greater than the state required amount of $225/monthly.

Salary Information: 12 Months, 250 Duty Days, Manual Trades Pay Grade 4. Salary based upon previous experience in post or equivalent position.

Pay Grade: Manual Trades, Pay Grade 4, 250 Days

Minimum: $16.48

Midpoint: $19.86
