Recruitment Range: $31,200 - $38,211

This is a range. Selected candidate's salary will be determined within this range based on qualifications, equity, and funding at the time of hire.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

Position maintains grounds of 27 acres at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Maintenance includes substantial turf areas, trees, shrubs, and landscaped beds. The areas include maintaining of the boardwalk, trail vegetation, and other natural perimeter's woodlands. Responsible for assuring proper mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pesticide application, mulching, edging, and trimming. Site is heavily programmed and maintaining of grounds must be scheduled around visitors' activities.

Key Responsibilities:

* Position will maintain the grounds of 27 acres which include mowing, fertilization, pruning, planting, chemical application, irrigation, and disease and weed control.

* Proven ability to operate power equipment and hand tools such as tillers, weed eaters, blowers, push and riding mowers, edgers, chain saws, hedge trimmers and removing trees and shrubs.

* Maintain all paths, porches, and boardwalk of debris so they are safe for all visitors.

* Demonstrates knowledge of native plants, trees, and shrubs.

* Supports activities of departments and events as assigned by the supervisor.

Position/Physical Requirements:

* Must have the ability to engage with visitors to answer general questions about various plants, trees, and shrubs.

* Must be able to work varied schedules, holidays, and weekends.

* Must have the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

* Must possess a valid NC driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

* Ability to prepare and safely use equipment and tools used in grounds maintenance

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

* Demonstrated experience in the planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, plants, and/or grasses

* General knowledge of the types and uses of common power equipment and hand tools used in grounds maintenance work

* Demonstrated experience making minor repairs to lawnmowers, hoses, rakes, pruners, and/or other grounds maintenance equipment

* General experience using a computer (i.e., Email, word processing, access the internet)

* Knowledge in the identification of native plants, trees, and shrubs

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of progressive experience in horticultural work

or

Associate's degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution

or

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Division Description:

Roanoke Island Festival Park is a 27-acre site. First opening in 1983 with the Elizabeth II, a 16th century replica sailing vessel, and a visitor's center. In 1998, an expansion project was completed adding an 8,500 sq. ft. Adventure Museum; a 240-seat film/small performance indoor theatre; a 50-seat auditorium; Ticket Sales; a 3,000-sq. ft. meeting room; an outdoor performance pavilion with lawn seating for 3,500; a museum store; administrative offices; maintenance facilities; waterside boardwalks; and a public Kayak Launch.
