Salary: $34,051.68 AnnuallyLocation : 1301 Brentwood Street, High Point NC 27260Job Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 6740Department: Parks & Recreation ParksOpening Date: 04/22/2024Closing Date: ContinuousJob Description The Parks Maintenance Groundskeeper performs maintenance on athletic fields and in parks as needed. Operates tractors and various mowing equipment to keep athletic field turf mowed; also, responsible general upkeep within the parks including debris picks up; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Parks Maintenance Crew Supervisor or the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. Regular daytime hours are Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Work schedule may include nights, weekends and holidays. Working July 4th is required. Essential Tasks
  • Performs and assists in general park maintenance including mowing, edging, pruning, trimming, spraying, watering, chemical treatment, planting and general care of grass, plants and trees;
  • Operates tractors and various power equipment to mow and maintain parks and athletic fields;
  • Prepares seed beds, lays sod, spreads seed, lime, fertilizer and straw;
  • Weeds, mulches, prepares plant beds and plants flowers;
  • Assists in irrigation repairs, building erosion control walls and installing drain lines;
  • Hand waters ball fields, sets up hose and sprinklers, and under supervision, turns on automatic irrigation system;
  • Performs general painting;
  • Cleans and performs simple maintenance on equipment;
  • Cleans park and athletic field restrooms;
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields;
  • Assists with playground installation and maintenance;
  • Assists in maintenance and repair of tennis and basketball courts;
  • Picks up litter and empties trash cans;
  • Does general maintenance as required;
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Special Requirements
  • Must have valid appropriate driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor for long periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • Employee may be required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Efficiency in operating turf equipment a plus.
Qualifications
  • Formal education includes the completion of a High School Diploma or GED.

Physical RequirementsVisual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Recommended guidelines for vision are:
  • Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see other workers, equipment and vehicles from a distance for safety reasons when operating equipment and supervising employees. Both eyes 20/22 - R 20/25 - L 20/25 corrected
  • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see operating panel of equipment and other work aids close at hand. Both eyes 20/25 corrected
  • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time and to operate the equipment safely. Depth Perception -4
  • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. To ensure safety, must be able to see wide span of area to observe employees and other people as they enter and leave work area.
  • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area. Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly from equipment and the immediate work area to observe other equipment or people who may be located at varying distances.
  • Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Necessary to distinguish color from varying hues of gray. This can be important when determining plant colors and in identifying other employees from park visitors by the color of their clothing.
  • Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
    • Medium to Heavy Work - Exerting considerable force constantly in operation of work tools and equipment. Physical demand requirements usually require walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting, and stretching, although worker does sit on rare. There is significant use of arms, hands, feet and legs.

    • Reaching, Handling, and Fingering: (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction). (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingering not involved). (Fingering - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling). All are requirements of this job.
    • Talking and/or Hearing: (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word). (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Both necessary to converse with employees working together to accomplish tasks. Must be able to hear over noise of motors to respond in the event there is a mechanical warning or verbal warning during operation of equipment.

    • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and handle practical situations and requests made by supervisor or members of the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner. Good judgment is important.

    • Using Arithmetic: Ability to use arithmetic to figure measurements and distances and in preparing proper amounts of chemicals to be used.
    Language Ability
    • Read: Ability to read manuals, instructions, blueprints, directions, and other documents related to the job.

    • Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with other employees and the supervisor.
    Environmental ConditionsPhysical Surroundings
    • The Groundkeeper is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions. Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Since this is primarily a seasonal job performed during the summer, the weather is usually hot and at times extremely hot. Combining the type of work performed with the weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in a hot environment. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting wet, dirty and sweaty.
    Hazards
    • The Groundskeeper will be exposed to chemicals and fertilizers associated with grounds work, trash, garbage, paint, paint thinner, and cleaning products. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
    Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment
    • Grounds Maintenance: Buckets, trash bags, litter stick, rake, shovel, broom, blower, trash cans, push mower, string trimmer, edger, swing blade cutters, and vacuum.
    • Facility Maintenance: Chemical cleaners, water hoses, bowl brushes, brooms, shovels, paint, scrapers, wire brushes, paint brushes, paint thinner, paint roller, and ladder.
    • Loading and Unloading Truck: Fertilizer and lime bags, bleachers, and supplies.
    • Basic Turf and Landscape Maintenance: Shovels, rakes, picks, seed forks, pitch forks, hoes, water hoses, wheel barrows, and seed spreaders.
