DEPARTMENT: Facilities Maintenance

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months (240 days)

SALARY: Based on Bulloch County Schools salary/supplement schedule

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Landscape Services Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:

A Groundskeeper I operates electrically-powered and gasoline-powered equipment and machines, as well as small hand and power tools, to maintain, care for, and modify landscapes and sports fields throughout the Bulloch County School District. This position performs daily manual labor to complete landscape maintenance tasks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma/GED.

At least one year of experience in landscape maintenance, horticulture or related field.

Valid Driver License.

Ability to perform manual labor both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

Ability to operate hand tools, power tools and powered industrial equipment.

Ability to read and interpret fertilizer and pesticide labels.

Ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance of equipment.

Ability to interpret and follow verbal and written instructions/directions.

Ability to communicate effectively and cooperatively with others.

Experience working with a diverse group of people.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstration of completion of training or certification in landscape maintenance, landscape installation, horticulture or turf grass management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs landscape maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, mowing, edging, string trimming, debris removal, shrub and tree pruning and mulching.

Operates zero turn, reel, rotary or push mowers to maintain grassed areas.

Operates 2-cycle equipment such as string trimmers, edgers, hedge trimmers, chain saws and blowers to complete landscape maintenance tasks.

Prunes trees and shrubs.

Uses powered equipment and hand tools to create and/or improve drainage.

Removes or installs landscape plants and hardscape materials.

Installs and repairs irrigation.

Applies fertilizers and pesticides.

Completes minor preventative and corrective maintenance to equipment.

Applies field paint to mark or line sports fields for competition.

Applies hardwood and pine straw mulch.

Performs other duties as requested.

Attendance and Dependability: Ability to report to work at the scheduled time and to seldom be absent from work. Demonstrate prompt and regular work attendance. Process appropriate paperwork to authorize absences in accordance with school system procedures. Ability to complete work in a timely, accurate manner and to be conscientious about work performance.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent or designated supervisor in accordance with Policy GBI - Evaluation of Personnel.
