Napa Valley College is seeking a Groundskeeper within the Facilities Services Department. Facilities Services provides maintenance and safe operations of the college's physical properties, custodial services and grounds maintenance.

The incumbent in this position will be providing professional landscaping services for all campuses; performing ongoing landscaping and maintenance tasks, as well as, routine maintenance on all landscaping equipment; and ensuring safe grounds area/s and athletic fields are maintained.

The job reports to the Director, Facilities Services.

This is a full-time, 12 months per year, classified position. The salary has an appropriate placement on range 6 of the current Classified Salary Schedule. The starting salary range is $3,654 to $4,229/month, with future steps up to $5,142/month. The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and public employee retirement system membership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

* Maintains plants, trees and shrubs (e.g. pruning, trimming, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining plant health and a safe campus environment.

* Maintains job related grounds keeping equipment (e.g. lawn mowers, hand tools, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment is kept in safe, working order.

* Maintains landscaped and building exterior areas and related items (e.g. storm drains, fields, gutters, roof drains, service tunnels, lights, walls, curbs, courtyards, etc.) for the purpose of preventing flooding and removing hazards.

* Plants a variety of landscaping materials (e.g. lawns, shrubbery, flowers, etc.) for the purpose of keeping grounds professionally landscaped and protected against erosion.

* Prepares and maintains sports fields, tracks, and spectator areas (e.g. chalk fields, paint stripping, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate, landscaping and safe areas for college and community sporting events and physical education classes.

* Provides pest control services on campus grounds, buildings and facilities (e.g. weed, rodent, insect, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a continuing program of preventive pest control.

* Repairs irrigation systems and components (e.g. valves, wiring, timers, switches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment and equipment components are in proper working order and maintaining a safe environment on campus.

* Responds to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.

* Supports facilities operations for the purpose of ensuring adherence to regulations regarding hazardous materials and campus needs.

* Transports a variety of tools, equipment, supplies, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the campus grounds are ready for use.

Other Functions:

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in grounds maintenance including tractors; weed whips; mowers; hand and power tools, etc.; and adhering to safety practices.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: method of preparing and maintaining various plants, shrubs, lawns, etc.; and safety practices and procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; meeting deadlines and schedules; working under time constraints; communicating with diverse groups; and demonstrated sensitivity to an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.

Work Environment:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 35% walking, and 60% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Job requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Experience:

One (1) year of job related experience.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid CA Driver's License & Evidence of Insurability

Ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator License

Continuing Education / Training:

Maintains Certificates and/or Licenses

Clearances:

Criminal Background Clearance

Tuberculosis Clearance

Physical Capacities Test Clearance

Title 8, USC, Section 1324-A requires verification of eligibility for employment in the United States.

Desirable Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of ornamental gardening;

Demonstrated knowledge of tree care concepts and ability to perform various activities related to urban forestry/arboriculture, such as diagnostics, pruning, removal, fertilizing, and planting.
