- Plants shrubs, trees, and flowers; prunes trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds.
- Removes trash and debris from stairs and walks; rakes leaves and mows.
- Waters trees, shrubs, and lawns; performs minor irrigation activities.
- Sprays for weeds and insects using unrestricted chemicals as required.
- Applies fertilizer; top dresses, tills, and re-seeds garden and grass areas.
- Operates large power lawnmowers, edgers, hand tools, and vehicles associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities.
- Operates pick-up trucks, dump trucks, tractors, trucks with trailers, and forklifts for hauling purposes and trash and debris removal.
- Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools as required.
- Shovels and removes snow and ice and places ice melt in designated areas such as sidewalks, pathways, and entryways as required.
- May assist with the maintenance of parking lots and other surfaces and assist with installation and removal of outdoor signs and traffic/control barriers as required.
- Moves furniture in classrooms and office areas as needed.
- Occasionally assist in the delivery and installation of furniture.
- May serve on various campus committees as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
- Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to any of the various college activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College.
Qualifications
- Some grounds maintenance or landscaping experience preferred.
- May require possession of a valid New Mexico or Texas driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods.
- Knowledge of equipment, tools, and procedures of grounds construction and care.
- Knowledge of methods of planting, cultivating and caring for hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers.
- Skill in operating grounds maintenance and grounds construction equipment.
- Ability to recognize the common species of shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in New Mexico.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification.
- Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and follow simple oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain and make minor repairs of ground tools and equipment.
- Ability to lift 25/80/100 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to respond quickly to sounds.
- Ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Ability to see and respond to dangerous situations.
- Ability to climb ladders while carrying up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions (Hot & Cold weather).
- Ability to wear personal protective gear correctly most of the work day.
- Keep all campus security/safety training up to date.
