Groundsworker Crew Chief-Full Time- 12 months Approximate work hours: 6:30 am - 2:30 pm Monday-Friday Summer hours - Monday -Thursday 6:00 am - 4:00 pm *Join the NYS Retirement System *Paid holidays, sick, personal & vacation days;eligible for health and dental insurance Distinguishing Features of the Class The work involves responsibility for the ground's maintenance and upkeep of the outdoor school facilities. The Chief is responsible for the grounds personnel and equipment to perform said maintenance duties. The Chief is under the direct supervision of the Director of Facilities or his assistants, and is allowed to exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties. The position holds supervision over a staff of skilled and unskilled employees, and may perform related work as required. Typical Work Activities includes but is not limited to:
- Supervises the employees assigned to the grounds crew and plans the department's daily and long-range schedules.
- Oversee the issuance of overtime and holds and maintains records of its issuance.
- Supervises and participates in the various routine job assignments such as: Mowing & trimming grass, raking leaves, cleaning sidewalks, trimming bushes, shrubs, & trees, and other general grounds maintenance.
- Supervises and participates in the care of lawns, trees, shrubs, gardens.
- Supervises and participates in the maintenance of parking lots, sidewalks, athletic fields & courts, drainage systems, playground surfaces,
- Develops and implements plans, supervises, and participates in snow removal to allow the opening of school roads, parking lots, access walks, and building entrances; including the handling and distribution of salt.
- Supervises and participates in the repair and preventative maintenance of grounds equipment, vehicles, and tools.
- Supervises and participates in the hauling and delivery of supplies, district assets, and items, the removal of rubbish, scrap, plant waste, and other debris.
- Schedules, plans, implements, and oversees the training and cross training of employees on a variety of skills and procedures.
- May requisition supplies and equipment as required.
- May plan budget requests for personnel, equipment, and supplies.
- May evaluate work of assigned employees.
- Holds regular staff meetings to collaborate, communicate, and plan with staff assigned to grounds crew.
- Communicates and works collaboratively with leadership and personnel across the district; i.e., maintenance, custodial, department directors, and administrators.
Job Qualifications Full Performance Knowledges, Skills, Abilities, & Personal Characteristics Thorough knowledge of the principals, practices, and techniques of general grounds maintenance. Good knowledge of the methods used in propagating planting cultivating, pruning and general care of plants flowers shrubs and lawns. Good knowledge of the growth characteristics of flowers plants, and bulbs. Good knowledge of the methods equipment and materials used in snow plowing and maintenance of parking lots, roadways, paths, entrances, and exits to buildings. Ability to establish and meet work performance for scheduled completion. Ability to estimate accurately the cost of repairs. Ability to maintain accurate records on materials and supplies used, site maintenance budgets and equipment usage. Ability to prepare detailed reports. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others. Ability to get along well with others. Shows good initiative and resourcefulness. Ability to follow written and oral instructions, show good industry, and dependability. Holds good judgment. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Minimum Qualification A) Graduation from high school, vocational school, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. Five years of experience in site maintenance or grounds maintenance work. 1 year of which was a supervisory capacity, OR; B) Nine years of experience in site maintenance or grounds maintenance work .1 year of which was in a supervisory capacity, OR; An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A&B Special Requirement Possession of a valid NYS commercial driver's license CDL appropriate for class of vehicle operated. Note: verifiable part-time and or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting fulltime requirements.
