Job Description

Job Title: Group Exercise Program Coordinator

Department: Health & Wellness

Reports to: Branch Director and/or Team Leader

Position Summary:

The Group Exercise Coordinator is under the direction of the Team Leader for Healthy Living and is responsible for hiring, scheduling, training, supervising, and evaluating all employee and volunteer group exercise instructors and specialty instructors for the Health and Wellness Department. This position is responsible for evaluating the quality of the Group Exercise and Wellness Department, members' needs and enhancing the program accordingly. The coordinator will promote the value of the health and fitness function within the mission of the organization and will be directly responsible for providing the highest quality service to members and the community.

This position requires an ability to work effectively with others and be a positive team member. Good organizational skills, strong relationship skills, general knowledge of business procedures, good verbal & written communication skills, and strong computer skills are essential.

Educational & Experience Requirements:

  • Ability to multitask, work productively under limited supervision. Ability to prevent or quickly solve problems.
  • Experience with personal training and instructing group exercise classes required.
  • Experience implementing nutrition or athletics programs preferred.
  • Degree in health & wellness, kinesiology, fitness/exercise science, or equivalent preferred.
  • Must hold a current group exercise certification from one of the following groups: American Council on Exercise (ACE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) or Cooper Institute.
  • Must be able to receive and maintain CPR, first aid, AED, blood borne pathogen, child abuse training certifications.
  • Must have 3+ years of practical experience in health and wellness preferred.
  • Handle the scheduling and provide substitutes for any/all group exercise classes.

Essential Skills:

· Must have excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing to individuals and small groups. Must be able to build rapport and relationships with all instructors and members.

· Increase member connection and commitment to YMCA programs and services and ensure the member experience is consistent, integrated and aligned to YMCA goals for member experience and engagement.

· Assist with coordinating & ensuring rooms are set-up according to rental requests or class needs & returned to usual state (work with maintenance).

· Ensure fitness rooms are well maintained; equipment is in safe & working order, facility is cleaned appropriately and kept tidy. Pursue repair/replacement of items as needed.

· Previous supervisory experience preferred.

· Four-year college degree in Exercise Science or related field of study or working on degree preferred.

Miscellaneous Duties:

  • Support the mission of the YMCA.
  • Wear appropriate attire that does not conflict with the YMCA dress code.
  • Report within 24 hours, in writing on appropriate forms, all accidents/incidents, including recommendations/reporting safety and equipment concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned that are necessary to support facilitation of programs, operations, promotions, etc.

Work Shift Duties for Group Exercise Coordinator may include:

· Organization of cleanliness concerns for the Group X, Wellness Center and Multi-Purpose Areas.

· Opening and/or closing as Director on Duty (scheduled determined by branch director)

· Specialty Classes instructor for individuals with physical challenges (i.e. DSS, ARC, etc.)

· Office/administrative/class floor instruction duties as need arises.

· Staff meetings, attendance/plan/assistance with delivery of special Association events (for members and Association wide).

This job has supervisory responsibilities under the direction of Department Team Leader and/or Branch Director.
