Group Fitness InstructorRecreation & Parks DepartmentSalary Range: $19.95 - $32.92 HourlyFLSA Position Class: Non-ExemptWork Schedule: Varies PT 19 hrs. or less per weekClosing Date: Open until filledJob OverviewResponsible for providing groupfitness instruction, monitoring the progress of participants, and educating members on the benefits of exercise and overall health.NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.* Instructs scheduled group fitness classes in a timely manner, providing adequate warm-up, exercise, and cool-down activities.* Maintains daily class rosters and monitors the attendance of participants.* Prepares the studio, equipment, and supplies necessary for classes prior to the session.* Utilizes a variety of fitness equipment.* Secures a substitute for classes when the instructor will be absent; notifies full-time staff no less than two hours prior to any substitutions for any reason.* Assists members, answers questions, and maintains a positive exercise environment for participants.* Report all problems with equipment, supplies, and facilities to the appropriate supervisor.* Maintains accurate files and accident reports.* Attends staff meetings and training.* Performs other duties as assigned.* High School Diploma or GEDSpecial Requirements* Possession of a valid N.C. driver's license or ability to obtain within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.* First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities* Knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment of group exercise.* Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies and the incorporation of music, tempo, rhythm, and cueing techniques.* Knowledge of fitness and exercise safety standards and guidelines.* Knowledge of age-appropriate exercise classes and programs.* Ability to adhere to program standards and objectives.* Ability to plan, organize, instruct, and supervise exercise and fitness programs.* Ability to operate necessary fitness and exercise equipment for group classes.* Ability to instruct participants on the proper use of fitness and exercise equipment.* Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.Job Related Physical Activity RequirementsThis position involves medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and to convey detailed or important instructions to others; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.Working ConditionsThe employee is subject to indoor environmental conditions involving noise, vibrations, and hazards related to sports activities. Employees may be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Employees may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
