Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in counseling or social work. NJ School Counselor certification or NJ School Social Worker certification Demonstrated knowledge of laws and regulations regarding child welfare. Effective problem-solving, human relations and communication skills. Successful experience working with families and community health and social services agencies. Knowledge of the college search and application process and availability to travel to colleges/universities, as required (high school counselors) Required criminal history check and other pre-employment requirements U.S. citizenship or resident alien status. REPORTS TO: Principal, Director of Guidance JOB GOAL: Identifying students' academic and social/emotional needs, as well as providing any necessary interventions. Helping students develop skills and behaviors crucial for academic achievement PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage an elementary school caseload Demonstrate thorough knowledge of counseling theory and practice in daily activities. Provide academic, career and personal/social emotional counseling. Participate in all meetings regarding assigned students (Team, 504/I&RS, etc). Maintain all student records and protect their confidentiality. Assist students who are experiencing academic concerns. Work with students on an individual basis or in small groups in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment, peer relationships, coping strategies, understanding self and others, study skills, conflict resolution and decision-making. Consult with faculty members to provide appropriate suggestions for working with students. Confer with administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline and provide appropriate counseling to students. Implement a developmental elementary school curriculum by conducting classroom lessons focusing on academic, social/emotional, career awareness. Provide a responsive service consisting of prevention and/or intervention activities to meet students' immediate and future needs. Make referrals for students with critical needs to outside and/or community agencies and to other school support services. Assist in the identification process of pupils with special abilities or needs, emotional concerns and work collaboratively with teachers and administration to adjust the academic program to meet the individual needs of students. Work collaboratively with building administration on HIB related matters. Provide assistance with testing as requested by the building administration. Any other duties assigned by the Administration. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10-month work year and salary as per GFT Contract. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state law and provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified staff.
