Job Description:
Summary: The Hardlines Assistant Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of department operations, including customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial reports, marketing, and store safety. In addition, the Assistant Manager will recruit and train department employees, establish work schedules and assignments, and provide guidance to help employees grow professionally.Duties & Responsibilities:Store Operations
  • Ensure a positive, professional, and safe work environment for all associates.
  • Supervise the general operations of the department.
  • Work with Department Managers and other Assistant Managers on all aspects of running the store.
  • Supervise and assist with daily maintenance, orderliness and cleanliness of the sales floor, stock room and outdoor merchandise areas.
  • Oversee all point-of-sale functions including training, maintenance, audits, and reports.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and repairs to maximize and protect all physical assets.
  • Assist with special projects for the company as necessary or directed.
  • Meet or exceed departmental sales and margin goals.
  • Develop departmental budgets for sales and expenses.
  • Attend trade shows and seminars with company guidance.
  • Visit competition to provide awareness of competitor pricing and strategy.
Inventory & Merchandising
  • Ensure forklift operations and receiving is completed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ensure receiving, checking in, stocking of merchandise for the department is being conducted efficiently and safely.
  • Responsible for maintenance of sales appropriate back stock levels.
  • Ensure monthly cycle counts and negative on hand reports are being completed.
  • Ensure that price changes and label updates are completed timely and accurately.
  • Supervise and assist in ordering and maintaining desirable product inventory levels to ensure in-stocks and store profitability.
  • Perform or assist with merchandise resets throughout the store.
  • Assist to ensure all signage is current in the store.
  • Assist in presenting a clean and orderly sales floor, including end caps and promotional and incremental merchandising.
Customer Service
  • Provide positive representation of department.
  • Proactively assist customers in solving problems.
  • Ensure customers are greeted and thanked upon entering and departing the department.
  • Provide a friendly, outgoing demeanor; work well with customers as well as associates.
  • Ensure all calls, emails, & communication are answered promptly, courteously, and effectively.
  • Handle customer complaints. Work to resolve problems with the customer and have Company's best interest taken into consideration.
  • Possess excellent product knowledge and knowledge of store layout and location of products.
Personnel Management
  • Assist with managing the duties and performance for all hardlines department staffing.
  • Review and maintain schedule to ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • Review, approve and submit timecards and time off requests as needed.
  • Ensure all staff members undergo and maintain proper materials handling training.
  • Implement recruitment and retention strategies that will benefit the department.
  • Create and maintain a team orientated culture that fosters development and a positive attitude by providing consistent performance feedback.
  • Provide transparent feedback and support concerning operational functions utilizing a hands-on mentoring approach, while ensuring the respective functions are performed with excellence.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Recommend or initiate personnel actions, such as employment, performance evaluations, disciplinary measures, and professional development.
  • Ensure staff is complying with all company standards and policies.
  • Maintain accurate filing system/records.
Perform other projects or duties which benefit the company as assigned by the department manager.Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with clients, sales staff, and internal personnel.
  • S. Degree or equivalent 5-7 years' work experience.
  • Industry knowledge of product and materials.
  • Prior supervisory and management experience.
  • Self-starter with strong problem solving and decision-making ability.
  • Excellent time management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities appropriately.
  • Customer Service and dispute resolution.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common sales and inventory statistics and financial reports.
  • Must be detail-oriented, well-organized, and adept at managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with POS, Microsoft windows, Word, Excel, BisTrack, and Outlook software.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift >= 50 lbs.
  • Valid MA driver's license and possess clean driving record.
  • Work schedule requires Saturday availability.
