As a Barista at Temple of Zeus Café in Goldwin Smith and Klarman Halls, under the direction of the Café Manager, you will prepare espresso drinks in a contemporary style. The Temple of Zeus has been in Goldwin Smith for over 50 years, providing the College of Arts and Sciences, and visitors, a respite from the busy campus around them. As a Department of the College (and now located in Klarman Hall) we provide an eatery, and workspace, with a different focus than many other options. Our ingredients are carefully selected with many local additions and a focus on sustainable farming practices. The offerings are simple but made to high quality standards.Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Understanding espresso machines and the equipment used to produce coffee. Maintaining café cleanliness and communicating clear practices to students and other staff. In addition, the Barista is responsible for preparing items used for drink making (caramel, chocolate ganache, vanilla syrup…) and other café items. The process is quite involved with fine details necessary to be successful. The Barista will be the lead on the coffee side of the operation, will be able to self-direct and make choices about service during busy times. The Café Barista will help close the café when needed. This position will be a mix of making drinks, preparing other items such as breakfast food items, sauces for drink making, chai, ice tea, maintain ingredient inventory, and ringing up customers for their purchases. In addition, this position must ensure proper storage of food/drink items, maintain temperature and portion control as specified by management and stock production area as needed.Position is 40 hours per week (usually 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.) for 10 months of the year and the remaining 2 months (mid-June through mid-August) will have some flexibility based on business. Hours may decrease significantly to 20 hours/week or perhaps no hours some weeks during this 2-month summer period.Required Qualifications:* High School education or equivalent and three years related experience.* Must be able to read, write, do basic math and communicate in English effectively.* Have or obtain a food safety certification.* The successful candidate for this position will require a strong background in professional espresso service. This should include an understanding of commercial espresso machines and preparation of up-to-date espresso drinks.* Attention to detail is required with these necessary skills that are similar to that of a pastry chef.* Requires training in a Third Wave coffee environment.* Be able to provide quality customer service.* This position is a physically demanding job, requiring lifting, repetitive tasks, and prolonged periods of standing. These tasks will also need to be performed in accordance with a production schedule that is driven by service volume.* Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs.* Must be able to tolerate extreme ranges in temperature in work areas.* The ability to work with a team and take direction from multiple coworkers is an additional requirement.* Must communicate effectively and maintain a helpful attitude at all times.* Must have creativity and flexibility to fit into daily operations as needed.Preferred Qualifications:* Understanding of or training in SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) coffee practices.No visa or relocation assistance provided.Applications will be accepted through Thursday, January 2, 2025.
