SUMMARYThis position is responsible for directing, leading and directing, and mentoring the men's and women's tennis programs, including management of assistant coaches and recruitment, training, and mentoring of student-athletes. The Head Tennis Coach must possess a vibrant Christian faith, an understanding of and commitment to the mission of Calvin University, and to building a healthy team culture. The coach must be a highly collaborative colleague, an outstanding manager, and a results-driven, competitor with a record of success. This position requires an understanding and commitment to the mission of Calvin University, the ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, and excellent relational skills for an ability to work with students, parents, coaches, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and outside contacts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Contribute to the moral and spiritual formation & growth of the student-athletes in keeping with the mission of Calvin University.
- Adopt a growth-mindset, welcoming constructive criticism and showing evidence of ongoing development.
- Plan and lead training practice sessions, workouts, classroom sessions and strength and conditioning program that enhances individual and team performance.
- Work collaboratively with the Sports Medicine team, the Strength & Conditioning program and the Sports Information office.
- Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with assistant coaches and student-athletes through a positive and constructive approach to all tasks, show respect for the competencies of others, and demonstrate appropriate conflict resolution behavior.
- Work with athletic administration to develop contest competition and practice schedules.
- Maintain a positive working relationships within the Athletic Department staff and faculty and across the university, collaborating especially with the Academic Division, Enrollment and Advancement Division staff, and other college constituents.
- Depending on team size and travel distance, drive for out-of-town trips if needed
- Accept constructive criticism and show evidence of professional growth
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics for coaches (Calvin, MIAA, NCAA)
- Perform other duties in accordance with this position as deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The Head Tennis Coach must be a confessing Christian who is comfortable in articulating his or her beliefs to the team and encouraging their spiritual formation. Other requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEThis position requires a bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred) from an accredited college or university and at least three years of successful high-level tennis coaching, preferably at the college level.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSThe position requires knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Provide clear direction, model accountability and authority.
- Work collaboratively with the admissions office to recruit new student-athletes that have the ability to achieve success academically and athletically at Calvin.
- Understands and abides by all recruiting rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA.
- Collaborate with the Center for Student Success and other relevant offices and resources at the university to monitor academic progress and remain in compliance throughout the year in order to promote academic success in terms of eligibility, retention, and graduation.
- Communicate skillfully and effectively with colleagues, subordinates, and student-athletes.
- Maintain self-control and set an example for sportsmanlike conduct in relationships with your team, officials, administration, and opponents in victory or defeat.
- Provide clear direction of responsibility and authority.
- Attend and contribute to athletic department meetings and functions.
BUDGET AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT- Monitor budget and expenses routinely and ensure timely turnaround of team credit card reconciliation, invoice payment and expense reimbursements.
- Keep the program within allocated budget parameters.
NCAA RULES/COMPLIANCE- Adhere to MIAA Conference and NCAA Division III rules.
- Attend all internal compliance meetings, follow departmental policies, and complete paperwork, trainings, and reports on time.
FUNDRAISING/ALUMNI ENGAGEMENTWork with Athletic Director/Department and Development Office to actively engage alumni and support all fundraising efforts.
ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS- Assess team competitive performance versus expectations.
- Analyze how well did the team competed when compared with expectations and be able to adjust as necessary.
ROSTER GOALS/RETENTION MANAGEMENTMaintain sport specific roster and retention goals as determined by the Director of Athletics.
