CLASSIFICATION: ClassifiedTITLE: Athletic Coach - Head Coach Level REPORTS TO: Monroe High School Athletic DirectorPOSITION SUMMARY:To plan, organize and implement the teaching of fundamentals, strategies, rules and proper condition in the assigned sport, designed to meet the needs and interest of student athletes. To provide effective leadership that will ensure a positive learning environment and will stress the importance of academic achievement as well as competitiveness. To demonstrate a high degree of ethics, professionalism, human relations and be a positive role model for all students. To provide overall coordination of the assigned sport.Applicants are encouraged to review Board Policy and Procedures 4295 to understand the District's philosophy and direction for its interscholastic activities.Candidates for coaching positions are screened and interviewed by the high school assistant principal in charge of athletics and/or principal. To apply for a coaching job, candidates submit a completed application and a letter of interest to the Personnel Department.Preferred Education and Experience
  • Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport and at the same level
  • Previous teaching experience at the same level as the assigned sport
Special Requirements
  • Valid First Aid/CPR card prior to assuming any coaching responsibility
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date - District provided)
  • Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date - District provided)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Assigned sport and rules and regulations governing the sport including WIAA guidelines
  • Current educational research and issues related to student athletes
  • Effective coaching techniques for developing student athletes
  • Inventory and budgeting procedures
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIESLeadership & Ethics:
  • Teaching sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic and responsibility to one's team
  • Building positive public relations in the school, with parents of athletes and in the community
  • Providing direction to assistant coaches and being responsible for their conduct
  • Supporting and enforcing the District's rules/regulations and code of conduct for athletes
  • Complying with Monroe High School rules, District policies, League and WIAA requirements
  • Ensuring that discipline of athletes is firm, fair, consistent and aligned with District policies and student athlete Code of Conduct
  • Accepting responsibility for conduct/dress of student athletes
Program Management:
  • Maintaining communications with high school administrators and other head coaches including attending required coaches' meetings.
  • Ensuring that all team meetings, practices and competitions are under the direction of and supervised by a coach
  • Supervising and conducting practices and contests safely; supervising locker rooms and buses
  • Working with secretary assigned to athletics to coordinate practice schedules, competition calendar, and transportation
  • Managing uniforms, equipment and school facilities in a responsible manner
  • Submitting an annual budget
  • Monitoring athletes' school attendance, grades and personal conduct; ensuring that athletes have complied with physical, insurance, ASB card and eligibility rules prior to any participation
  • Setting up and supervising any off-season conditioning program as approved by the administration
  • Recommending letter awards
  • Organizing year end award presentations
  • Preparing year-end written summary evaluation of the program and recommendations for improvements
  • Ensuring the availability of a properly supplied first aid kit and emergency care cards at all times
Coaching Skill:
  • Instructing athletes in safety procedures and the need to report injuries immediately to the coach
  • Teaching sports techniques, playing rules, strategies and playing tactics
  • Attending clinics/workshops related to the sport
  • Conditioning athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength and agility
  • Responding to player injuries with approved first aid techniques and referral to team trainer; ensuring that injured athletes have appropriate release before returning to participation
  • Adhere to federal and state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures and practices
  • Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, boundary invasions, fights, substance abuse etc.
  • Abide by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
  • Maintain regular punctual attendance.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONSThis position is that of a head coach and is represented by Monroe Education Association collective bargaining unit. The position of head coach will work a schedule determined by the athletic season. Salary and benefits as determined by the current collective bargaining agreement. Coaching salaries vary depending on the coaching assignment, coaching experience, and the level of competition.EVALUATION PROCEDURESPerformance shall be evaluated annually according to Board and administrative policies and procedures.Created: April 2017
