SUMMARY:
Ensures an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors. Oversees and supports assigned custodians in the performance of their assignments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises the work of the Assistant Custodian, Substitute Custodians, Summer Help Custodian, and Summer Help Youth Workers as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Incumbent performs a majority of the following duties)
* Inspect work performed to ensure that it meets specifications and established standards.
* Instruct staff in work policies and procedures, and the use and maintenance of equipment.
* Check equipment to ensure that it is in working order.
* Inspect and evaluate the physical condition of facilities in order to determine the type of work required.
* Inventory stock to ensure that supplies and equipment are available in adequate amounts.
* Issue supplies and equipment to workers.
* Recommend changes that could improve service and increase operational efficiency.
* Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them.
* Gather and empty trash.
* Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
* Clean and polish furniture fixtures.
* Clean windows, glass partitions, walls, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and or/ squeegees.
* Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
* Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to manufacturer specifications.
* Extract carpets as needed. Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
* Observe bulb outages. Change light bulbs as needed.
* Open and/or close buildings to ensure the building is secure.
* Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
* Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
* Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
* Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
* Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, using snowplows, snow blowers, and snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements
* Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S ?Valid Driver's License or State Identification Card.
Verifications
* High school graduation or G.E.D. Certificate required.
* Minimum of two years of professional cleaning experience in a public service institution.
* Must pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background checks in accordance with District Policy and Procedure. High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Knowledge & Experience
* Thorough knowledge of cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers and cleaning compounds.
* Familiarity with handling inventory of cleaning supplies to ensure availability to custodial teams.
* Strong background in handling, mixing and using cleaning chemicals in a safe manner.
* In depth knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, housekeeping procedures and materials.
* Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards safety rules.
* Competent at conducting building inspections to determine signs of vandalism or needed repair work.
* Proven ability to work long hours standing, capability of climbing ladders and working at heights.
* Extensive experience in overseeing custodial teams and working in a team fostered environment.
* Ability to work in a high-volume environment that has continuous contact with the general public.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.
* Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to operate a computer and utilize applicable software.
* Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do the job.
* Ability to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
* Ability to use mathematics to solve problems; specifically measurements of chemicals used.
* Ability to manage one's own time and the time of others.
* Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff and public.
* Manual dexterity and stamina necessary for the effective performance of duties.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS
* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and is occasionally required to walk, stand, lift/carry, push/pull, balance, reach/handle objects, and perform repetitive motions. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
* This position has potential for exposure to temperature extremes, risks and/or hazards, noises or vibrations, irate parents or disruptive students. Occasionally required to work outside of regular scheduled hours or for weekend activities. Work subject to frequent interruptions or distractions.
