Friends of Historic Elk Rock Gardens is hiring a Head Gardner to join our team in Portland!Key Details:
  • Pay: $50k - $55K depending on experience and skills
  • Benefits: On-site living quarters
  • Location: Historic Home and Garden on the Willamette River in the westside Dunthorpe neighborhood of Portland.
  • Schedule: Full-time, variable hours depending on season, weather, public opening, and events.
Who We Are:The Elk Rock Garden Foundation was established to provide financial assistance for maintaining and perpetuating the Elk Rock Garden and keep it open to the public. To restore and preserve the historic Elk Rock Garden property as a nationally recognized botanical garden and learning center dedicated to supporting collaboration and cross-pollination among partner non-profits, their membership, and gardening enthusiasts of all backgrounds. You enjoy organizing and working with volunteers, using their skills and interests to meet organizational goals.Qualifications:
  • Community college degree and/or undergraduate degree focused on the management of landscaping or horticultural operations.
  • A minimum of five years of working experience in a similar garden environment with at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • Familiar with landscaping design
  • Extensive knowledge of regional plant life
  • Knowledge of local pests and how to eliminate them
  • Knowledge of synthetic and natural fertilizers
  • Knowledge of state health and safety regulations for landscaping
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check
  • Valid driver's license
What You'll Do:
  • Support the organization's mission and strategic plan
  • Participate in the Board of Director's meetings
  • Manage a variety of volunteers as the needs arise
  • Interact with the visiting public as requested
  • Monitor the health of all plants and green spaces
  • Water and feed plants
  • Trim trees and Shrubs
  • Fertilize and mow lawns
  • Weed, mulch, and edge gardens
  • Keep green spaces and walkways clear of debris and litter.
  • Operate and maintain landscaping equipment, including mowers, leaf blowers, and trimmers.
