Location: Fort George

Thank you for your interest in the post of Head of North Region with Historic Environment Scotland. Your base location is flexible, but you will be expected to travel to visit sites and stakeholders across your Region, which includes Shetland, Orkney, the Outer Hebrides, and world-famous sites such as Urquhart Castle and Skara Brae. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment.

As one of four Heads of Region, you will lead a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and be responsible for the operational management and care of the historical sites within your Region. You will represent all HES interests, identifying and developing relationships with stakeholders across civic and industry groups to make our service more visible, relevant, vibrant, and vital to Scottish communities.

Overview of the Post

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the postholder will be one of four Heads of Region and part of the Operations Directorate's leadership team. The Operations Directorate was created two years ago to strengthen our regional footprint and bring together the delivery of many of HES' activities at a regional and local level across Scotland.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Director of Operations in developing the strategic direction of the Directorate.
  • Deliver an operating plan for your Region that supports the delivery of this vision.
  • Lead the operational management and care of sites in your Region.
  • Drive forward visitor operations and conservation activities.
  • Lead a large team of colleagues across a wide range of disciplines.
  • Create a culture that empowers colleagues and enables decisions at a local level.
  • Inspire your team to engage with HES's objectives and explore new opportunities for their development.
  • Represent HES at a senior level and engage with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.
  • Identify and resolve potential conflicts at an early stage.
  • Introduce innovative solutions to optimize resources within the Directorate.
  • Prioritize and plan work efficiently to deliver long-term care of properties.
  • Maintain a strong customer and business improvement focus.
  • You will bring strong leadership and communication skills to the team and demonstrate exemplary personal judgment, initiative, and collaborative skills.
