Job Description:

Overview of the Role

We are seeking an experienced church or non-profit executive to provide strong leadership and direction for the staff and operations of Meetinghouse Church. The successful candidate will cultivate a positive working environment, supervise and develop staff, and oversee all day-to-day business functions and operations that support the mission, ministers, and ministries of the church. This is an interim role—planned for one year, with possible extension--to promote congregational unity and growth in a time of change, address gaps in staff coverage, and ensure continuity of church ministries and operations while we clarify our future staffing needs and transition to a new and permanent leadership structure and staff. The Interim Head of Staff (IHS) will work closely with the Church Council and Church Administrator, providing strategic direction for operational planning and resource management. The individual will work collaboratively with the Interim Minister of Worship & Christian Formation (IMWCF), enabling the IMWCF to focus on preaching, teaching, and shepherding the congregation during this time of transition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with ministers and lay leaders to develop strategic priorities and see that ministry plans and decisions are translated into practical action plans for implementation.
  • Oversee all church functions, programs and events to ensure ongoing strategic focus, coordination and effectiveness (e.g., congregational meetings, programs, worship services, stewardship campaigns, special projects, and community events).
  • Provide managerial direction and support for the Emerging Generations Ministry.
  • Establish and monitor financial and HR management policies, processes, practices and performance targets to achieve goals, maintain high standards and propose improvements.
  • Cultivate a positive working environment and supervise, coach and develop staff.
  • Oversee and direct all church communications and information systems—internal and external—to ensure clear, coordinated and consistent flow of information.
  • Ensure effective maintenance and sound stewardship of church property and resources.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Significant (3-5 years) experience as an Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer or Head of Staff in a mission-driven organization managing multiple leaders and functions, a sizable staff (at least 10) and comparable congregation (200-500)
  • Bachelor's degree with relevant business management or administrative leadership training
  • Solid general management skills including financial, human resources, information systems, communications, and development functions.
  • Ability to ramp up quickly in new organizational situations--understanding the unique context and needs and delivering sound guidance and significant impact
  • Experience and skills in managing organizational change and transition
  • Collaborative style with strong team development and people leadership skills
  • Effective communication—both listening and speaking—and consensus building skills
  • Ability to work effectively within the Congregational governance framework (a free-standing body guided by the Holy Spirit and bound by a Covenant with the Lord and with one another)

Meetinghouse Church Overview

Meetinghouse Church is an independent Congregational community that covenants together to follow Jesus and care for our neighbors, near and far. Although founded in 1946, in recent years, we have been working through a time of significant transition as we clarified our core values, changed our name, and worked to adapt to challenges within our congregation and around our community. Our church is located in Edina, a southwest suburb of Minneapolis MN, but our members come from many areas of the Twin Cities and from many different denominational backgrounds. We are one church with two worship expressions: a Traditional Service and an Alternative Service. We have ministries that cover all life stages including Emerging Generations (children, youth, young adults and families), Adults and Seniors. We are known for our commitment to excellent music and worship, our generous giving and volunteering, and our extensive and long-standing missional outreach at home and abroad. These Core Values capture our spirit and our aspirations: Welcome Beloved, Risk the Messy Path of Faith, Wrestle with the Tensions in God's Word and World, Immerse in Sacred Spaces and Rhythms, and Do Good for Christ's Sake.
