The Student Success unit builds foundational information literacy skills for CSU students, improves university student success metrics by partnering to integrate library instruction into core curriculum courses, and supports programs that help students successfully transition to CSU. The unit collaborates and partners with other campus programs to provide library outreach and support for holistic student success.

Position Summary: The Head of Student Success provides strategic, flexible, and creative leadership for a team of librarians who build a foundation of information literacy to support undergraduate students throughout their academic journey. Guided by inclusive pedagogy and teaching effectiveness principles, the team uses methods and tools that prioritize active engagement, fosters cross-campus collaboration and partnerships, and supports students' overall academic success and well-being.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Record of professional accomplishments supporting minimum appointment at the rank of associate professor for Continuing and Contract Faculty (non-tenure track).
  • At least six years of outreach, reference, or instruction experience in an academic or research library.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage projects, assess impacts, and resolve complex challenges.
  • Demonstrated success leading and organizing teams to achieve common goals.
  • Proven ability to implement innovative changes in library services and programming in response to emerging trends or new strategies for enhancing student success.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice and how they relate to the mission of the Libraries.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the time of hire. CSU Libraries will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Job Duty Categories

Librarianship: Leadership and Strategy

  • Provides creative and flexible leadership to establish a scalable, sustainable, and impactful program of base-level library information literacy and instruction to support student success.
  • Uses research and evidence-based practices to design, assess and improve information literacy and outreach programming.
  • Coordinates cross-library unit programming with peer unit heads.
  • Stays abreast of emerging trends and opportunities for libraries to contribute to student success.
  • Collaborates with and designs library programming with university partners.
  • Sets strategic and tactical goals and priorities for the unit in coordination with the Associate Dean for User Services and Assessment.
  • Participates in library-wide strategic planning and incorporates the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the CSU Libraries into Student Success unit operations.

Librarianship: Supervision and Management

  • Supervises the work of a team of librarians, including performance planning, evaluations, and goal setting.
  • Fosters an environment that embraces creativity and experimentation to meet user needs in innovative and relevant ways.
  • Reviews methodology and assesses services; develops new guidelines and implements changes when needed.
  • Analyzes relevant data, provides reports and information to library administration as needed, and incorporates results into decision-making processes.
  • Fosters communication between team members and eliminates work silos.
  • Oversees unit budget and contributes to library-wide budget planning and strategy.
  • Stays current in the field by pursuing professional development and integrates outcomes and learning into duties.

Service

  • Participates in service activities in support of the CSU Libraries, the university, and/or relevant professional organizations.
  • Reflecting departmental and institutional values, participates in diversity initiatives to advance the Department's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
