Job Description:

About Pacific Fusion

Pacific Fusion was founded in 2023 with the mission to power the world with abundant, affordable, clean energy. We are rapidly designing and building a pulsed magnetic fusion system to achieve net facility gain (more fusion energy output than stored energy input). In parallel, we are developing the key components required to build affordable fusion systems.

Our plans are ambitious. We have raised over $900M so far from incredible investors, resourcing us to deliver on these plans. We are bringing together the best scientists, engineers, and operators from the fusion community, hard tech industry, and other sectors. We are united by a shared sense of urgency to provide clean power for the world, particularly managing climate change while meeting growing global energy demand.

About the RoleJob Overview:

As Head of Target Fabrication you will own the production of precision fusion targets - the container which holds our deuterium-tritium fuel. We will implode these targets continuously at our fusion demonstration system. This will be a high-gain fusion system that demonstrates net facility gain and will have its own site, facilities, and infrastructure.

As the Head of Target Fabrication, you will own the in-housing of fabrication, test, and assembly for the Target Containers at a volume that will allow us to run experiments daily and ultimately commercialize fusion power.

Responsibilities:
  • Own the production of our targets and work closely with the R&D team to translate design requirements into built targets within a matter of weeks.
  • Design and build a team of technicians, engineers, and scientists that has the expertise and tooling equipment required to fabricate targets using a variety of modern precision metal machining and metrology approaches.
  • Ensure down to the smallest details that our targets can be precision-machined at the micron and nanometer scale, with commensurate tolerances.
  • Understand the qualities and scalability of a variety of metals and materials that could be used in target production.
  • Scale up a nimble and efficient production process that will allow our team to deliver targets quickly, consistently, and cost-effectively for our demonstration system and future commercial system.
Qualifications:
  • Expertise as a leader taking projects from early-stage prototyping to scaled manufacturing.
  • Deep industry expertise with relevant technologies such as: micromachining, micro/nanofabrication, electroplating, deposition, polishing, and cryogenic techniques, as well as associated metrology.
  • Knowledge of a variety of materials and their qualities ranging from common metals to cryogenic deposition of gases.
  • Experience developing products for an industry with relevant engineering challenges: semiconductor, optics, precision manufacturing, MEMS, computer chips, etc.
  • Able to translate never-before-achieved requirements into delivered solutions.
Benefits:
  • Industry-competitive salary.
  • Equity plan.
  • 6% employer 401k matching.
  • Generous paid time off (including sick leave, vacation, paid family leave).
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance.

Actual base salary offered will be determined by: experience, skills, and work location. This range is for base salary, our total compensation includes equity and benefits. We welcome you to apply even if your expectations are outside our listed range.
