Position Summary

The Salvation Army Northwoods Camp in Finlayson, MN, is doing the most good by providing summer camp opportunities to hundreds of youth from Salvation Army programs across Minnesota and North Dakota. The camp offers youth a safe, fun environment to develop physically, socially, and spiritually while participating in various activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, archery, music, and arts and crafts.

The Head Program Aide supports camp activities, monitors camper safety, maintains equipment, assists with meal service, and oversees the Critters Snack Shop. This role also helps coordinate schedules and tasks for other program aides, ensuring a smooth and positive camp experience. The position requires on-site residence throughout the temporary summer employment.

$425 stipend/week

Essential Functions (approximate time spent)

  • Safety and Observation (15%): Monitor campers and program areas for health and safety concerns, reporting any issues promptly to ensure a safe environment.
  • Maintain Equipment (15%): Check and prepare program equipment, ensuring it is in good working order and readily available.
  • Assist with Scheduling (15%): In coordination with management assist with scheduling and assignments of other program aides.
  • Support Camp Programs (10%): Actively participate in all assigned camp programs and activities, contributing to a positive and engaging experience for all campers.
  • Snack Shop Oversight (10%): Oversee the daily tasks of the Critters Snack Shop, ensuring smooth services and inventory checks.
  • Meal Assistance (10%): Assist kitchen staff with meal service, including setup, serving, and cleanup, to ensure efficient and timely meal operations.
  • Build Positive Relationships (10%): Foster a positive rapport with campers and colleagues, promoting a supportive and inclusive camp atmosphere.
  • Camper Behavior Support (10%): Encourage campers' compliance with rules and expectations.
  • Participate in Spiritual Activities (5%): Attend and actively engage in all designated spiritual activities and devotions as part of the camp program.

Education and Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and be willing to participate in religious activities.
  • Must pass background checks.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to attend staff orientation week.
  • Room and Board provided in addition to a biweekly stipend. Required to live on-site at Northwoods camp during the summer.
  • Position is seasonal, approximately mid-June through July, including nights and weekends.
  • Perform all physical aspects of the position, including being mobile, bending, and reaching.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to fully participate in activities and events (outdoors and indoors).
  • Camp environment; not eligible for a remote-friendly work environment.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with colleagues and participants.
