POSITION:

Under supervision, assists other professional staff by performing selected tasks in community health education services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Health Education Assistant I differs from the Health Education Assistant II in that the former is the entry level class in the Health Education series.

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

Health Education Assistant I: $19.47 - $27.23 per hour

Health Education Assistant II: $22.21 - $31.19 per hour

EDUCATION/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational Incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

DEPARTMENT / AGENCY: Health Care Agency - Public Health

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies. There are currently two (2) Regular vacancies within the Health Care Agency - Public Health.

Health Education Assistant I and II are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

OPENING DATE: October 15, 2024

CLOSING DATE: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs.Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

* Participates in ongoing activities designed to inform the target population of health services.

* Recruits volunteers and helps carry out specific community information efforts for the promotion of special clinics, programs and activities.

* Provides assistance as needed in development of printed material, including nutrition, food garden, and physical activity related materials and carries out pre-testing protocol for evaluation of proposed printed material.

* Works with community groups and agencies and other professional staff in planning, development and implementation of specific public health activities and programs (e.g., nutrition, food garden, and physical activity education classes and other innovative educational activities for contemporary health problems).

* Participates as a member of voluntary agency health coalitions for collaborative effort.

* Helps in the orientation and training of health aids or volunteers.

* Assists in conducting community surveys for health education and health policy programs.

* Conducts individual and group discussions to obtain community reaction to health education programs to assist community health services in education.

* Assists community health services in education.

* Participates in health surveys.

* Provides nutrition, food garden, and physical activity services both in person and through distance learning to both adults and youth of all ages. Assures confidentiality of information to all participants.

* Drives a County vehicle to scheduled services, outreach, and activities.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Health Education Assistant I:

Two (2) years of experience as a Community Worker or Program Aide in community health or related services.

Health Education Assistant II:

Possession of a Bachelor's Degree with a major in health education, sociology, home economics, biological science, psychology, education or a related field,

OR

One (1) year of experience equivalent to a Health Education Assistant I.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:

* Bilingual - English/Spanish

* Must possess and maintain a valid driver license issued by the State of California as a condition of employment.

* Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.

* Must be willing to travel throughout Ventura County and drive a County vehicle.

DESIRED:

* Knowledge of principles of healthy eating and engagement in physical activity.

* Experience in facilitating group education classes.

* Chronic disease prevention as it relates to healthy eating and physical activity practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Health Education Assistant I:

Working knowledge of: community health and welfare services and methods of health care delivery systems; group dynamics and human behavior; safety regulations and traffic laws.

Some knowledge of: the causes of the prevention of health problems.

Working ability to: give directions and explanations which are clear and understood; communicate orally and work with individuals from varying backgrounds; prepare routine staff reports; conduct group education classes and group discussions and obtain health data.

Health Education Assistant II:

Working knowledge of: human growth and development; communicable diseases; public health services; educational methods and materials and channels of public information.

Working ability to: speak and write effectively; gain support and cooperation of school and group representatives; learns statistical principles and procedures; identify neighborhood leaders and work with them in the development of effective health education projects; provide nutrition, food garden, and physical activity education and services; develop and disseminate public health education information; prepare nutrition, food garden, and physical activity materials and activities; and prepare informational materials to explain community services.FINAL FILING DATE: This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time; therefore, apply as soon as possible if you are interested. SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE - qualifying: All applicants are required to complete and submit the questionnaire for this examination AT THE TIME OF FILING. The supplemental questionnaire may be used throughout the examination process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position. APPLICATION EVALUATION - qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to continue to the next step in the screening and selection process.

ORAL EXAM - 100%: A job-related oral exam will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating applicants' knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to those factors which job analysis has determined to be essential for successful performance of the job. Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

NOTE: If there are three (3) or fewer qualified applicants, an oral exam will not be conducted. Instead, a score of seventy percent (70%) will be assigned to each application, and each applicant will be placed on the eligible list.
