Salary: $25,942.89 - $41,501.33 AnnuallyLocation : Mechanicsville, VAJob Type: Full TimeJob Number: 03247Department: Health ServicesOpening Date: 09/19/2024Description GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Enhances the educational process by the modification or removal of health related barriers to learning and by promoting an optimal level of wellness.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.   • Assists sick or injured students (calls parents of ill students and assists until parent arrives) and staff, performs routine and emergency first aid;
  • Administers medication to appropriate students, with parental permission and a doctor's order for prescription medication; keeps medication permission forms on file;
  • Maintains student health records, reviews records of entering students for immunizations, ensures all components of School Health Entrance Requirement are complete, notes health conditions documented on forms, collects information for State reports, and keeps emergency information up to date;
  • Collaborates with Health Services Coordinator on additional health concerns that may need to be referred to school counselor, school psychologist, physician, Child Protective Services, school administrator and/or health department officials;
  • Coordinates staff training with School Nurse or Health Services Coordinator for administering medications in absences of the LPN or for field trips. Ensures proper documentation of training, i.e. maintains record of CPR, First Aid trained staff, etc.;
  • Administer individual screening of vision and hearing; evaluate, refer and follow?up as required by Virginia school law and School Board policy;
  • Complete necessary forms and procedures for Bloodborne Pathogen exposure incidents and situations related to Workers Compensation as outlined in Exposure Control Plan, School Board policy and Regulations;
  • Participate in wellness programs for staff, in-service in education and attends all regularly scheduled staff meetings;
  • Supplies and adequately maintains the school clinic; checks first aid supplies and equipment daily; secures medications including controlled substances as required;
  • Provide immunizations as directed by School Board;
  • Follows Health Services Coordinator's directives in managing outbreaks of infectious illnesses;
  • Compiles a list of students with health problems and appropriately distributes to administrators and school personnel;
  • Ensures compliance with law that all schools with at least one student with diabetes have at all times two staff members trained in the administration of insulin and glucagon;
  • Assists Health Services Coordinator with Individual Health Care Plans for students with medical conditions, including allergies;
  • Ensures compliance with all laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information and obtains written consent of parent/guardian to share information;
  • Performs clerical duties including typing, filing and duplicating related to health services;
  • Assists in enforcing rules and discipline; performs student supervision duties as required;
  • Advises administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff (with consent) on all students with food allergies; develops or obtains care plans for students with food allergies and advises school personnel in recognizing the signs of food allergies and the appropriate steps to take including the administration of epinephrine
  • Perform related work as required.
Qualifications: KSA's, Education KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Maintain functional knowledge of current health issues and immunizations as they relate to school age children; knowledge of student instruction and management practices, procedures and techniques; general knowledge of school system rules and procedures for classroom, halls, cafeteria, library and transportation; ability to guide, direct, teach, and counsel students; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability and skill to make physical, social and emotional assessments requiring professional nursing knowledge and judgment. Contacts with students, parents, and staff may be non-cooperative and require diplomacy, skillful and thoughtful debate, tact and confidentiality. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Required: Must have a valid license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Must have a minimum of one year of nursing experience in a school setting or three years experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Must maintain current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid from a recognized provider (e.g., American Heart Association). Preferred: Three years experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse working with school aged children.A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Terms of Employment Location: Assigned SchoolWork Schedule: 10M - 217 Days - 7.25 Hrs.Paygrade: 09Salary Scale: UniformFLSA Status: Non-ExemptPhysical requirements and Disclaimer PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment. Duties are typically performed in a school clinic and other school settings such as classrooms, gym, cafeteria and recreational areas. Frequent movement throughout the school facilities is required. Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds and moving of students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. Position requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and grasping. Occasional exposure to potentially infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens is necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary. Occasional travel with students on field trips or athletic events could be necessary. Daily close and personal contact with students and regular contact with school teachers, counselors, psychologists and other specialists is necessary. External contact with community health care and social services providers, by phone and written correspondence is required. Occasional attendance to after school meetings as well as mandatory nurse meetings and/or trainings may be necessary.Health Benefits - Eligible to all employees who work more than 20 hours per week

An opt-out credit is available for full-time and part-time employees who do not participate. For those who participate in the High Deductible Plan, HCPS contributes annually to a Health Savings Account and employees can choose to contribute more to that account.

Time Off Benefits *
  • Paid Holidays - 10- month and 11-month personnel follow the School Calendar. 12-month full-time classified employees receive 13 holidays per year (9 designated days and 4 floating days).
  • Vacation - 12-month employees earn 1 day of leave per month for their first four years of service, 1.25 days for 5 - 9 years of service, and 1.5 days for 10 or more years of service.
  • Sick Leave - Full-time employees earn one sick leave day per month (10 - 12 depending on length of contract) with unlimited accrual. Part-time employees will earn sick leave on a prorated basis.
  • Personal Leave - Full-time employees earn two days per year the first 3 years of service and 3 days per year with 3 or more years of service.

  • VRS Retirement - Employees who work more than 5.5 hours per day participate in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The benefit is 95% paid for by Hanover County Schools.
  • VRS Hybrid Retirement Optional Contribution Plan - HCPS offers an additional plan for Hybrid employees who can choose to contribute up to an additional 4% in voluntary contributions to the defined contribution component of the Hybrid Retirement Plan each month, which is matched to a maximum of 2.5% by HCPS.
  • Retirement Savings Plans - HCPS offers 403(b) and 457 plans through Empower. These plans allow employees to set aside pre or post tax dollars for retirement. HCPS contributes $250/year toward 403(b) account for non-VRS eligible employees. Any HCPS employee can make contributions to these plans.

Income Protection & Security
  • Life Insurance -Paid for 100% by HCPS for VRS eligible employees. The benefit is two times annual salary for natural death and 4 times annual salary for accidental death. Additional life insurance is available for purchase to cover spouse and children or to increase employee benefit.
  • Sick Leave Bank - Income protection for up to 45 days due to a catastrophic illnesses/injury . Available to part-time, and VRS Plan 1 and 2 employees who enroll.
