About the roleThis position reports to the Transportation Supervisor and will also receive direction from the Lead Equipment Operator The duties of a Heavy Equipment Operator include the safe and efficient operation of all equipment associated with the Residue System, Ferrous Recovery System, and the movement of material throughout the Facility. All system operational duties must be performed in accordance with established Residue Systems procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Operating front-end loaders, side loaders, tractor trailers, locomotives, and actively loading or unloading vehicles.
- Taking appropriate action on his/her own initiative to prevent equipment damage or personnel injury.
- Operating equipment, record data, report equipment malfunctions or trends which indicate possible trouble and perform actions as directed to correct abnormal operating conditions or emergency situations.
- Maintaining the highest standards of housekeeping, performing preventative maintenance tasks, assisting with, and performing minor equipment repair work, handling municipal solid waste and solid waste residue in accordance with standard operating procedures, and painting and cleaning as required.
Qualifications: (what is required for someone to be successful in the position)- GED/HS Diploma preferredCovanta offers GED Works - a fully funded program for employees to achieve their GED.
- One (1) year experience in the operation of loaders, dozers, side sweepers preferred.
- Ability to drive a tractor trailer (CDL) preferred
Physical Demands:- Frequently exposed to high temperatures and outside weather conditions
- Working in a noisy and dusty environment
- Frequently required to stand, sit, climb, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach
Shift WorkPosition typically works a 5-2-2-5 schedule rotating 12 hour shifts.
