  • See to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in work crews busy.
  • Serve as a working leader of three or more employees in accomplishing trades and labor work.
  • Utilize best judgment in determining the extent of repairs needed for heavy mobile equipment vehicle.
  • Determine the required tools needed for repairing parts or components of such complex machinery or engines.
  • Pass on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, demonstrates proper work methods, and starts work.
  • Perform a variety of mechanical duties such as re-assembling, replacing, aligning, adjusting parts or components on heavy combat vehicles.
  • Assure that safety and housekeeping rules are follows (e.g., assures that machine capacities are not exceeded and that tools are properly used).

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment/deployment physical and maintain annual requirements.
  • Requires moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 lbs.
  • Requires use of personal protection equipment (PPE) that is provided by employer.
  • May be required to travel (TDY) 10% of the time for business purposes.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance for access to Depot Production Computer System.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Personnel Background Investigation (NACI).
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Temporary promotion may be made or extended up to a maximum of five years and can be made permanent without further competition.
  • Temporary appointment may be extended in one year increments up to a maximum of three years but cannot be made permanent.

The ability to perform common Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Leader duties of determining the proper tools, equipment, or parts that is required for the repairs. Reading guides such as blueprints, sketches, and technical manuals to understand the functions of parts or systems; performing repairs on heavy mobile equipment vehicles; and implementing troubleshooting analysis to diagnose malfunctions. Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Efforts: Required to work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching is required. Sometimes works on top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently carries items weighing up to 45 pounds. Required to push, pull, turn and position parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.
  • Working Conditions: Works inside and outside. Frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, noise, heat, dust, fumes, oil, and grease. Frequently exposed to possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Often exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acid, fluids, and lubricants. Required to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. Safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
