Position Type: Administration/Dean of StudentsDate Posted: 10/3/2024Location: Bishop McDevitt High SchoolDEAN OF STUDENTS (10 month) Full-Time School: Bishop McDevitt High School City & State: Harrisburg, PA NATURE OF POSITION The Dean of Students primary function is organizing and implementing the norms of conduct as they relate to the behavior and discipline of the students. The dean also has responsibility for the maintenance of attendance records and the supervision of student services and safety. The Dean of students has some supervisory responsibilities of Attendance Secratary, Counseling Department, and Instructional Support Services. The Dean of Students may have academic activities as assigned by Assistant Principal for Academics. REPORTING FUNCTION Reports directly to the Assistant Principal for Student Services and Academics and is part of the senior administrative team of the High School. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY Duties may include any or all of the following: Student performance;
- In the absence of the Principal or Assistant Principal, the Dean of Students collaborates with the other Administrators in the overall operations of the building
- Work with counselors and faculty to establish development plans for those students showing signs of academic struggle.
- Proactively evaluate the overall effectiveness of the programs developed with counselors and faculty.
- Implement strategies that will motivate and inspire students to succeed.
- Knowledge of Section 504/Accommodation plans and Special Education Services helpful
Student Discipline;
- Take responsibility for the administration of student disciplinary policies and use one's discretion in the consistent implementation of the rules, always keeping the Students' and school's well-being in mind
- Interpret the disciplinary policies for students, faculty and parents.
- Address disciplinary problems involving students and/or students and faculty
- Conduct interviews with parents in regard to attendance or disciplinary matters
- Determine the appropriate sanction for student violations of discipline policy; assign demerits for detentions, suspensions, etc...
- Supervise and monitor those structures developed to serve as consequences for inappropriate behavior, such as daily detentions, suspensions, expulsions, and parent meetings.
- To maintain student discipline / conduct and follow-through with correspondence, documentation, confidentiality, and record keeping relating to discipline including data entry of detentions and running statistical discipline report.
- Recommend dismissals to the principal, as needed, and report other actions taken by the Deans' Office
- Manage after school detention.
Student Attendance;
- To be present at the various entrances of school as students enter the building in the morning, and play an active role in the security of the buildings and campus.
- Oversee the work of the attendance office in maintaining accurate attendance records
- Monitor student attendance rates and ensure they remain high.
- To carefully monitor and address excessive student absences and tardies.
- Arrange for students' transportation with the public school districts
- Coordinate and schedule all faculty duties for bus supervision, detention and dances, etc.
Other Duties;
- Attend all assemblies and maintain good order at assemblies
- Conduct classroom visitation and teacher observations as needed
- Participate in interviewing candidates for teaching and staff positions as needed
- Running Various reports from Education Management Systerm (Rediker)
- Attend monthly faculty meetings and give reports as needed
- Assist with responsibility for school activities such as prom, dances and other social events.
- Serve as the administrative representative on the Student Assistance team and other related committees.
- Ensure the safety of students and school personnel through emergency management
- Attend administrative staff meetings and report on issues related to assigned responsibilities
- Perform other duties as directed by the Principal.
EDUCATIONAL / WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum Bachelors degree with an active teaching certificate and several years teaching experience.
- Excellent oral & written communication skills
- Experience working with students and parents on development issues to effectively analyze problems and concerns is helpful
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Knowledge working with students with disabilites, trauma, or behavior concerns.
- Knowledge reading, interpreting, and writing Accommodation plans.
