  • Create a safe, positive classroom environment, provide individualized learning, and use a variety of resources to ensure the success of students with disabilities
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Assess student progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques
  • Employ various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals
  • Establish and maintain student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities
  • Collaborate and consult with educational professionals (i.e., school psychologist, related service providers, social worker, etc.) regarding the needs of students
  • Work collaboratively with general education teachers on behavioral and instructional strategies to facilitate inclusion
  • Employ and implement a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures
  • Complete all necessary special education paperwork as mandated by Chapter 14
  • Coordinate and facilitate IEP meeting for students
  • Monitor student progress by collecting and analyzing data in order to make data-based decisions about the programming and placement of students
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in staff development activities provided by the District, LIU, or other approved educational providers
  • Participates in meetings/conferences with parents, teachers, other professional staff, and administrators as necessary to support student progress
  • Provide direction and supervision of classroom paraprofessionals, as directed
  • Possess knowledge of state, federal and Board policies, guidelines, and procedures and the rights and responsibilities of parents, students, teachers and schools as they relate to individuals with special needs
