Work involves the responsibility for the application of considerable skill and manipulative ability in the safe and efficient operation of various heavy equipment familiar to the highway maintenance and construction industry. Work also involves the operation of light-to-heavy weight and specialized highway maintenance equipment and performing a variety of manual labor tasks associated with highway repair, maintenance and construction. Work of this class is distinguished by the nature of the equipment operated and the nature of other responsibilities through special assignments. Operationally, Maintenance Specialists are accountable for quality work, equipment preservation, safely and efficiently while performing maintenance repairs and related activities while achieving department objectives. Maintenance Specialists are accountable for positively participating with other department team members in project and department work execution. Administratively, Maintenance Specialists are directly responsible for accurate time, materials and resource consumption documentation. The position requires a basic level of customer involvement, fostering productive relationships with communities and the public to identify needs, interests, and priorities and ensure service excellence Maintenance Specialists perform work in a group setting or independently according to oral or written assignments or established policies/practices under limited supervision with direction from the Lead Worker or Assistant Maintenance Supervisor. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as: motor graders, dozers, backhoe/loaders, loaders, skid steers and trucks along with all related equipment necessary for highway repair and maintenance at a professional level when assigned.
- Operates all types of highway maintenance and/or construction specialty equipment when assigned.
- Performs blading or road surface and shoulder smoothing.
- Performs bituminous blade patching.
- Performs snowplowing and hauling.
- Performs servicing, field maintenance, preservation and/or running repairs on equipment.
- Performs a variety of manual tasks related to highway maintenance such as crack sealing, patching, brushing, cleaning and repairing culverts, cleaning and painting bridges, restoring erosion, repairing potholes, repairing and replacing signs, erecting safety barricades, etc.
- Performs and/or assists with shop mechanical duties for major repairs of equipment.
- Performs short-term lead work duties, especially as related to small crew leader and garage responsibilities.
- Performs a variety of duties assisting with general building repairs.
- Performs related work as required in a highly effective and professional manner.
- Performs engineering technician duties assisting in data collection when assigned.
- Works in groups or individually while being respectful and professional to co-workers and the public at all times and helps promote positive work environment.
- Keep accurate and detailed daily time sheets.
- Operates computers and job related devices and software.
- Communicates effectively and professionally with others verbally and in writing.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned in a highly effective and professional manner.
- Maintains a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes, tanker endorsement, and DOT health card.
- Is readily available on a 24-hour emergency call-out basis for emergency operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Four or more years experience in related field or equivalent knowledge gained through education and/or experience
- Class B CDL and ability to obtain State Issued CDL Class A driver's license within 6 months.
- Air Brake endorsement
- Tanker endorsement
- DOT Health Card
Desirable Qualifications
- A combination substantially equivalent to some experience in highway maintenance, road construction and snow plowing along with experience or demonstrated ability in the operation and servicing of light to medium weight highway maintenance and construction equipment.
- Knowledge of the operating maintenance characteristics of associated highway maintenance equipment, especially assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of general highway maintenance techniques and procedures.
- Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.
- Knowledge of the maintenance and servicing requirements of assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of highway and/or construction related equipment.
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to highway maintenance operations.
- Ability to make operating adjustments and field repairs on assigned equipment.
- Ability to perform strenuous work under a variety of conditions
- Ability to perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction related assignments.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, both in terms of work orders and equipment operations.
- Skill in the operation of a variety of highway and/or construction related equipment, specifically the operation of a dump truck.
- Basic knowledge of computer operations.

Short-term disability payments begin on the first day following 14 consecutive calendar days of absence attributable to a qualifying disability. The plan provides income replacement of up to 50% of regular pay subject to a maximum limit of $1,000 per week.Long-Term DisabilityRegular full-time and part-time staff regularly scheduled at least 30 hours per week are eligible. Long term disability pays 50% of salary up to a maximum of $4,000 per month beginning on day 91 of total disability.
