The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions in Wenatchee, WA. These journey-level positions are members of the regional maintenance organization tasked with working with and assisting other WSDOT work groups. These positions may be situationally assigned to work with and under a number of different work group structures depending on needs of the region on a day to day basis. These positions perform a variety of skilled highway maintenance tasks while maintaining personal, co-worker and public safety as a primary objective in the planning and performance of all work assignments. These positions are responsible for maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, overpasses, and other highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. They perform a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. These positions will be assigned to winter shifts in the Regions snow and ice control program, operating snow removal equipment and repairing roadways, maintaining culverts and catch basins, removing debris, and providing traffic control for these operations.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

* Setting signs and other traffic control devices.

* Driving long distances and participating in mobile operation traffic control situations or as a buffer vehicle for any type of operation on the highways.

* Load or unload materials.

* Shoveling, carrying objects, holding equipment or tools.

* Installation, application, or layout of highway pavement markings.

* Pavement repair and maintenance.

* Guardrail installation and maintenance.

* Drainage maintenance and repair.

* Removal of animal remains and roadway debris.

* Removal of brush, trees, and other roadway obstructions.

* Remove litter and litter bags.

* Install and repair fences.

* Proficiently operate a variety of heavy equipment to apply anti-icing compounds and remove snow and ice from road surfaces safely and efficiently.

Qualifications

This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at the lower level (HMW1 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.

To be considered for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) you must also have:

* A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must obtain N (tanker) endorsement and current medial card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.

* One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.

* Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.

* Ability to manipulate, maneuver and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.

To be considered for the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) you must also have:

* A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medial card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.

* Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.

* Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.

* Ability to manipulate, maneuver and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

* High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.

* Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without restrictions

* Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging

* In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
