The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Highway Maintenance Worker 2s to join the Olympic Region (OR) Highway Maintenance Program out of Aberdeen, WA. The purpose of the Olympic Region Highway Maintenance Program is to ensure the highway infrastructure, WSDOT facilities and fleet are maintained in good working order; to operate the highway system effectively and safely; to respond to natural disasters, weather events, construction impacts and emergencies; and to provide environmental stewardship of lands that WSDOT owns or maintains. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor and Highway Maintenance Worker 3, this journey-level position is a member of the regional maintenance organization. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. The safety of the traveling public and fellow employees is a high priority and must be considered in every decision and activity.

What to Expect

A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. HMW2 may work alternate and emergency shifts as assigned and respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed. Rotational night/day shift is required. Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Overnight travel is required.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

* Operate Class A, B, and C highway equipment on approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.

* Perform pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt, and synthetic materials.

* Perform drainage maintenance; erosion and slide repair; sign maintenance and repair; and guardrail, fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.

* Complete danger tree removal; vegetation management, including pesticide application; establish, maintain, and repair landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites.

* Track, document, and report daily work activities; account for inventory and inventories highway section.

* Perform snow and ice control, to include application of anti-icing compounds to road surface with truck mounted equipment, loads trucks from stockpiles or pits.

* Design and set up traffic control for all operations; as well as full road or bridge closures according to departmental and MUTCD standards.

Qualifications

This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level, Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1), depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.

To be considered for this opportunity at the HMW1 level, the following are required:

* One (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities in a related field of work, such as highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, trucking, or heavy equipment experience.

* Possession of an unrestricted valid driver's license to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.

* Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.

* Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.

* Ability to work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, as well as traverse in rough, steep, and uneven terrain.

To be considered for this opportunity at the HMW2 level, the following are required:

* Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience. OR One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.

* Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to legally operate vehicles in Washington State; or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

* Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain within six (6) months of hire.

* Possession of Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License; or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

* Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.

* Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.

* Ability to work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, as well as traverse in rough, steep, and uneven terrain.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

* High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate, or equivalent.

* Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.

Important Notes

* This recruitment will be used to fill two permanent positions within the Olympic Region out of Aberdeen, WA. This recruitment may also be used to fill additional vacated positions.

* This position is not eligible for remote work.

* Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Overnight travel may be required.

* This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level, Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1), depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.

* HMW1: $46,920 - $56,880

* HMW2: $52,920 - $64,440

* In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
