Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe duties described below are indicative of what the Operator III (maintenance patrol) might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County ordinances for the position of Operator III or other designated equipment job descriptions. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned:Operation Functions: Safely operate skidsteer, loader, tractor loader, tractor backhoe, roller and other assigned heavy construction equipment, machinery and tools for highway and bridge construction and maintenance, construction and maintenance materials handling, and sand and gravel operations. Communicate with other operators to coordinate materials handling and delivery. Perform necessary maintenance and preventative maintenance to assigned machinery and equipment as directed. Respond to weather situations including snow and ice events, high water, washouts, and others as directed. Respond to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed. Perform general highway maintenance and related activities including snow and ice removal, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repairs, sign repairs, clearing brush, hauling materials, flagging traffic, roadway vegetation control, sweeping intersections, routing and sealing road cracks, culvert and drainage work, removing dead animals and trash and buildings and facilities maintenance repairs. Measures and places grade and alignment stakes using tapes, measuring devices and construction grade levels. Record and make reports for production, plant, inventory, state, federal and other types of reports and/or recordkeeping requirements. Operate loader and equipment for stock piling of road salt, sand, gravel, and patch material. Ensure all materials, vehicle and equipment are secured and are used in a safe and proper manner whether at job site or on Highway property. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.Additional Essential Functions: (for Maintenance Patrol) Thorough knowledge of and ability to safely operate heavy construction equipment including, but not limited to, smooth drum & rubber-tired roller, motor grader, bulldozer, and front end loader. Ensure proper traffic control devices and flagging operations on 2-lane and 4-lane highway work at all times. Thorough knowledge of standard highway and bridge maintenance practices. Ensure proper placement of roadway materials in order to minimize segregation. Knowledge of proper compaction methods of roadway materials. Identify unsuitable subgrade conditions or sub-standard roadway materials in a timely manner in order to minimize costs of corrective work. Safely traverse the terrain and thorough understanding of limitations of equipment. Work with supervisor and other employees to ensure that buried private utilities are properly located prior to excavation work. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum three (3) years experience in heavy equipment operation on a routine basis. Must be able to operate a variety of equipment relating to construction and maintenance of roads and bridges. Certifications as determined by the County based on the position. Road maintenance experience preferred. Class A CDL without restrictions E and L required. N-Tanker Endorsement required within 6 months from date of hire. MSHA certification for work in mines preferred. Employer-provided certification to be obtained within 12 months of hire. A cell phone is required.Pre-employment and Post- Offer Testing: Successfully pass a post-employment-offer physical exam, DOT drug screen, audiogram, and agility screening. Failure to pass these will result in the employment offer being revoked.Chippewa County offers a comprehensive benefit package that includes the following:
  • Health Insurance - The County's Health Plan's Third Party Administrator (TPA) is AmeriBen. The network is Anthem BluePreferred network including most medical providers in the Chippewa Valley. The plan has a $3,000 - Individual and $6,000 - Family deductible with an HRA funding. Individual and Family coverage has a $0 monthly premium for General Municipal Employees (GME). To determine monthly premiums for WPPA Employees, please refer to the WPPA Labor Agreement 2023-2025.
  • Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) - The County contributes money on the employee's behalf and can be used for qualified Medical, Dental, or Vision expenses. All employees and dependents enrolled on the Health Insurance Plan qualify. A total of $500 per person enrolled on the plan, up to a max of 4 - $2,000 annually.

  • Care Navigation - All employees and dependents enrolled on the Health Insurance Plan have the ability to utilize Alithias.   • Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS - ETF) - Employees (GME) will begin contributing 6.95% (2025) immediately to the state pension program through WRS. The County will match the employee contribution, 6.95% for a total of 13.9%. This percentage may change each year based on state requirements.   • Additional Insurance Plans Offered: Dental, Vision, Life, Accident, and Critical Illness, Short-Term (GME only) and Long-Term Disability Insurance; Flexible Spending and Dependent Care Accounts.
  • PTO - accrual equal to 7.09 hours of PTO per pay period (26 pay periods in a year). An employees total accrued PTO may not exceed four hundred eighty (480) hours. PTO hours roll over year to year.
  • Holidays - 10 paid holidays per year.
