The Highway Patrol Telecommunications Shift Supervisor (TSS) directs the operations of an assigned shift by monitoring and reviewing the work of Telecommunicators. The TSS provides assistance and/or direction during difficult or critical operations, assigns tasks, acts as a resource for Telecommunicators and performs the duties of a Telecommunicator as needed. The TSS also ensures that shifts are appropriately staffed, monitors work schedules, approves and grants leave requests, prepares activity reports, and informs the Telecommunications Center Supervisor of shift activities. The TSS may perform the duties of a Telecommunications Center Supervisor or Telecommunicator as needed. The assigned work location is Troop HX Communications in Union, NC (Rowan County).
Additional position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Recruiting, selecting, developing, counseling, disciplining and evaluating performance of employees to retain a diverse workforce.
* Administering and ensuring compliance with Human Resources policies and procedures.
* Providing on-the-job training to trainee Telecommunicators.
* Reviewing work and providing instruction to subordinate Telecommunicators.
* Making decisions in critical life and death situations and processing large volumes of information in a short period of time.
* Analyzing information to recognize or extract critical elements of emergency situations and determining the necessity to notify specialized resources.
* Directing communications activities in especially critical situations.
* Speaking clearly and distinctly, listening and expressing directions, and communicating orally and in writing with supervisors, peers, subordinates, other agencies and the general public.
* Maintaining effective working relationships with all stakeholders.
* Utilizing a strong understanding of Highway Patrol administrative, management, and HR duties and responsibilities.
* Adhering to the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) and Division of Criminal Information's (DCI) rules and regulations pertaining to the transmission of messages by radio.
* Operating multi-channel telecommunications equipment, software programs such as Excel and Microsoft Word, and office copiers and equipment.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. This position is required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

The salary grade for this position is NC06. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
* Experience as a Highway Patrol Telecommunicator.

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and 2 years of experience as a Telecommunicator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must meet the applicable education, employment, and training standards as required to be Department of Criminal Information (DCI) certified; must be DCI certified or become certified within 120 days of employment.
