Query the provider (physician or other qualified healthcare practitioner)for clarification and/or additional documentation when there is conflicting, incomplete, or ambiguous information in the health record regarding a significant reportable condition or procedure or other reportable data element dependent on health record documentation (e.g. present on admission indicators). Advance coding knowledge and practice through continuing education, including but not limited to meeting continuing education requirements.Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Assign codes to diagnoses and procedures using ICD (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) Codes.
  • Ensures codes are accurate and sequenced correctly in accordance with government and insurance regulations.
  • Communicate (Query) with the medical staff for any documentation that is insufficient and/or unclear.
  • Able to work independently
  • Understands and works coding edits and bill holds.
  • Flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Coding certification with AHIMA and/or AAPC required.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Two year degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred.
  • One or more years of hospital inpatient coding experience preferred.
  • Certification with AHIMA is preferred, but will acknowledge AAPC.
Physical Requirements:
  • The position requires a high degree of mental and visual concentration. No lifting requirements. Requires long period of sitting, with repetitive motion.

Pay Range Disclosure:
  • $21.63 to $31.25 per hour
