Overall responsibility for the planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of all technical and/or operational activities and staff members in the laboratory.
Responsible for operating the lab with the highest quality, safety and integrity in an efficient and economical manner.
Plan, assign and direct work in the laboratory.
Serve as liaison with other areas as needed.
Mentor and support direct reports in their responsibilities and functions.
Identify and implement training programs as necessary to ensure they receive training in supervisory skill development.
Interact respectfully and build relationship with hospital management.
Define, coordinate and monitor quality assurance programs.
Partners with Regional QA Mgr. and supervise activities of the department Quality Coordinator/Representative. to ensure quality control and compliance procedures are followed and QC reports are up to date.
Oversee plans and preparations for all inspections, e.g.CAP, NYS, OSHA, EPA and others.
Oversee staffing of all personnel in the laboratory to always ensure proper staffing coverage.
Under Hospital HR guidance, effectively maintain quality staffing by interviewing, hiring, training and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling.
Identifies and implements training programs as necessary.
Oversee activities of the department, distribute/assign work, determine priorities, schedule non-routine procedures.
Submit appropriate documentation for procurement of such.
Perform duties of AP technologist (histology/cytology/grossing/special stains, IHC) as necessitated by absence or peak workload.
Perform advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques. Re-evaluate methodology, make recommended changes and assists in test interpretation.
Determine if further testing should be done on samples or if test should be repeated.
Assists the Pathologist in gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen section procedures.
Assists the Pathologist in hospital surgical cases on the hospital floors as needed.
Review test performance, drive process improvements and project management.
Manage test database and ensure departmental standard operating procedures and database accurately reflects the current process and pro-actively implement new processes as regulatory requirements changes.
Actively participate on subspecialty committees, corporate committees and business unit committees as needed.
Performs and monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used.
Resolve problems through interaction with clients via phone calls or other means of communication.
Define, coordinate and monitor EHS programs and supervise activities of the Department Safety Coordinator.
Ensure EHS regulatory standards and safety procedures are followed.
Oversee plans and preparations for inspections.
Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition.
Adheres to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, JCAHO, and laboratory safety requirements.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field. - REQUIRED
Master's Degree - Preferred
ASCP Certification - Preferred
NYS Clinical Laboratory License -REQUIRED
Minimum five (5) years full-time supervisory experience
New York State Clinical Laboratory License
5 years clinical experience
The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity.
Comprehensive theoretical and operational job knowledge in designated specialty required.
Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
Proven leadership and problem-solving skills.
Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities and to handle several tasks simultaneously for maximum department efficiency.
