Horticulture Crew Member

Job Title: Horticulture Crew Member

Classification: Non-exempt

Reports To: Grounds Supervisor

Job Summary/Objective: The Horticulture Crew Member performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks relating to the maintenance and beautification of the campus property and associated horticulture projects. This position also assists in a 'complete land management' strategy and will assist with ground keeping and agriculture as necessary to manage total quality on the Sweet Briar property.

Position Type/Expected Work Hours: Full time, 40 hours per week; 7:00 - 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Overtime and evening/weekend availability may be required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Essential Responsibilities:

* Maintain gardens and planted landscaped area quality, including formal and informal landscape spaces and edges using the proper equipment

* Demonstrate a general knowledge for general landscape and horticulture care

* Assist in the development and execution of care plans for sustainable food operation. This includes both internal greenhouse spaces and external garden spaces.

* Maintain turf areas with proper equipment to include mowing, bush hogging, edging, weed control

* Assist in care plans for overall agriculture work as necessary

* Effective operation of heavy equipment such as a tractor or bobcat

* Effective operation of mowing equipment

* Perform routine and emergency cleanup of trees and shrubs.

* Perform snow removal duties, operating snowplow(s), spreader, and other snow removal equipment as required.

Required Qualifications:

* Valid driver's license and insurability

* High school diploma or equivalent

* Experience operating heavy equipment such as Bobcat or tractor, and mowing equipment

* One or more years of related grounds/agricultural experience

Preferred Qualifications:

* Associate degree or higher in Agriculture, Horticulture, or related fields

* Three to five years or more of experience in sustainable agricultural practices

* Virginia Commercial Pesticide Applicators License

Work Environment: (Include items such as occupational exposures or unusual working hours or environments) Must be able to work weekends and longer hours if needed. The position requires work to be completed in all types of weather conditions.

This position is considered essential.

Physical Demands: Extensive periods of standing/bending/sitting will be required. Ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs regularly. Full range of body motion, including reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and walking.
