Job Description:

The Horticulturist is a key member of Agronomy team and will apply all of their experience and knowledge to provide outstanding service.

General Purpose:

Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds; and performs related tasks as required. Designs landscape plans for facility grounds and is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of that plan.

Essential Duties:

* Oversees the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees on the facility grounds including pruning, trimming, root feeding and pest control.

* Directs and assists the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement and spraying of trees and shrubs, and tending to high stress areas especially during the summer months.

* Develops detailed annual plans for the seasonal rotation of plants, flowers, etc., in the facility's various landscaped areas and flowerbeds resulting in fresh, eye-catching and pleasant flower and plant displays.

* Stays attuned with current fertilizer and pesticide application. Participates in the application of fertilizers and pesticides.

* Oversees the preparation of soil plant beds, established by seed or transplants, and maintains annual perennial flowers in aesthetically pleasing arrangements.

* Oversees the operation of mechanical and power equipment utilized in the maintenance of ornamental plants and trees.

* Coordinates snow removal (where applicable).

* Assists the Manager in interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, evaluating performance, rewarding, and disciplining associates; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

* Assists in the management of department members that may include, but is not limited to: Landscapers, Foreman.

* Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new associate. Assists in developing ongoing training programs.

* Assists in monitoring business volume forecast and plans accordingly in areas of manpower, productivity, costs and other expenses.

* Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.

* Regular and reliable attendance.

* Performs other duties as required.

Education/Experience:

* Associate's degree (AA); or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Demands:

* Regularly stands, walks and sits. Regularly uses hands; reaches with arms and hands; talks or hears. Occasionally climbs or balances; stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls; tastes or smells. Regularly lifts up to 50 pounds.

Environment/Noise:

* Occasionally works in wet or humid conditions (non-weather); works near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. Noise level is moderate.

Certificates/Licenses:

* Valid Driver's License, Pesticide Application License.

* Ability to read and speak English may be required in order to perform the duties of the job (e.g. the associates may be required to communicate with English speaking customers or co-workers, the manuals for the equipment the associates may use are in English).
