Knowledgeable and passionate Horticulturist to manage and maintain the care of roses and other plants within our prestigious Rose Garden. The Horticulturist will play a vital role in the cultivation, propagation, and health of various rose species, ensuring the garden remains an inspiring, beautiful, and educational space for visitors.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Supervise all outdoor employees at the Rose Complex; evaluations, interviews, and projects.
2. Oversee and manage budget, monthly forecasting, meetings, maintain payroll, planning, and purchasing, etc..
3. Oversee the day-to-day maintenance and care of roses, including watering, pruning, fertilizing, and pest control.
4. Manage and schedule irrigation, and spray schedule.
5. Monitor rose health, identify diseases, pests, or other horticultural issues, and implement
effective solutions.
6. Propagate roses through cuttings, grafting, and other methods to expand the collection and replace aging plants.
7. Collaborate with the garden design team to enhance garden aesthetics by arranging plants
and introducing new rose varieties.
8. Plan and execute seasonal plantings, including selection, soil preparation, and transplanting of new roses.
9. Maintain a detailed record of plant species, care routines, and growth progress.
10. Assist with educational programs, tours, and public horticulture and rose care events.
11. Ensure all tools, equipment, and facilities are maintained and used safely and efficiently.
12. Supervise and train groundskeepers, laborers, interns, and volunteers.
13. Bring back and oversee the American Rose Trial program (ARTS).
14. Oversee the Chamblee's Garden, City Hall landscape, and WE Brookshire's Landscape.
15. Oversee Maintenance complex and greenhouses.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Research and develop; Improve plant yield, disease resistance, and quality.
2. Environmental management, implement sustainable practices to minimize environmental
impact and promote biodiversity.
3. Provide expert advice to gardeners and landscape designers on plant care and cultivation
techniques.
4. Positively contribute to the culture of the department
5. Performs other related duties as assigned
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
1. Must have extensive knowledge in horticulture, botany, plant science, or related fields.
2. Proficient in plant propagation, pest management, and soil science.
3. Ability to conduct research and analyze data to solve plant-related issues.
4. Outdoor work: overseeing work being completed, checking for diseases, inspecting the
garden, ensuring plants are doing well, checking the soil.
5. Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
6. Some weekend and holiday work may be required for garden events.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
An associate's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, or a related field is required, plus (3) three years of experience. Must have 1 year of supervisory experience. Must have extensive knowledge of rose varieties, propagation techniques, and pest/disease management. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record or the ability to obtain a Texas Driver's License within (90) ninety days from the date of hire.
A bachelor's degree in horticulture, botany, plant science, or a related field is preferred.
Horticulturist certification preferred. Pesticide certification is preferred.
