YWCA: norma herr womens center

The YWCA of Greater Cleveland is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. YWCA recognizes the systemic barriers to housing such as racism, sexism, and ableism and every day our staff work with women at Norma Herr Women's Shelter to navigate these barriers.

After taking over the site operations in 2018, Norma Herr still remains Cleveland's only low-barrier emergency shelter for adult women aged 18-80, serving an average of 170 or more guests each night providing each person with access to safe shelter and up to 3 meals a day, 365 days a year.

YOUR impact AS A Housing Navigator

As a full-time Housing Navigator with YWCA working with the women of the Norma Herr Shelter in Cleveland, you will play a crucial role in conducting housing assessments and creating personalized housing plans for our guests in need. Your participation in team projects, workshops, and community outreach activities will empower guests with essential knowledge to achieve housing stability. By staying abreast of housing resources and providing short-term crisis intervention services, you will be instrumental in supporting our program population.

Additionally, your responsibilities will include transporting guests as needed and monitoring their progress closely, ensuring that data is accurately collected and outcome measurement reports are produced to track their journey towards sustainable housing solutions. Your collaborative and empathetic nature will be key in fostering a safe and supportive environment for all shelter guests and staff.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IN A Housing Navigator

To excel as a Housing Navigator, candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience working with the client population, coupled with the ability to offer group facilitation and educational sessions. Essential skills include a deep understanding of human development within the program context, encompassing areas such as child abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health diagnosis, and suicide risk assessment. A valid Ohio driver's license, auto insurance, and a dependable vehicle are vital for transportation needs.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are crucial, along with a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development. Flexibility in working Saturdays and evenings, as well as a collaborative spirit to support other areas of the organization as required, are key attributes for success in this role.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • At least 2 years' working experience and knowledge relevant to client population specific to program including ability to teach and/or group facilitation.
  • Knowledge of human development specific to program such as indicators of child abuse
  • domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health diagnosis, and ability to assess suicide risk and complete a lethality assessment.
  • A valid Ohio driver's license, auto insurance and a reliable vehicle.
  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Willing to remain current and increase knowledge relevant to client population specific to program.
  • Ability to work Saturdays and evenings when needed.
  • Willingness to assist in other areas of the NHWC as needed.
